
Assistant Professor
Kate Harwood is an Assistant Professor in the Department of City and Regional Planning at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Dr. Harwood has a PhD in Public Policy from New York University where she was also a Doctoral Fellow at the Furman Center for Real Estate and Urban Policy. Her research lies at the intersection of urban economics and real estate, housing policy and public economics, with an emphasis on how these fields interact with climate change. Her dissertation included papers examining the impact of natural disasters on rental markets and the role of government rental subsidies in the wake of such events, the impact of the increasing corporatization of landlords, and the effectiveness of policies aimed at reducing discrimination against subsidized households in the rental market.
Prior to starting at NYU she was a Senior Analyst at Abt Associates. She earned an MS in Economics from Tufts University and a BA in Political Science and Sociology from the University of Miami.
