Professor of the Practice
Dr. Salvesen retired from UNC Chapel Hill in 2021, after serving as the Deputy Director for the Center for Sustainable Community Design for fourteen years. While at UNC, he conducted research, taught and mentored students, and provided planning and technical assistance to communities striving to become more sustainable and resilient. He managed the Sustainable Triangle Field Site, teaching a course on sustainable cities, a capstone class and an environmental seminar. He also taught a six-week summer study abroad course on sustainable development and renewable energy.
Additionally, Dr. Salvesen produced a series of short films, Climate Stories NC, which sought to document stories about climate change from people across North Carolina (fishermen, apple growers, beekeepers, oyster growers, hunters, and farmers).
Dr. Salvesen specializes in the field of Land Use and Environmental Planning, and has taught in the Natural Hazard Resiliency Certificate program in the department. Dr. Salvesen holds a PhD from UNC’s DCRP.
