This position works directly with other professional planning staff to perform work in administering the Town’s Unified Development Ordinance (UDO). This highly skilled position requires the ability to apply the UDO to specific situations and provide accurate and well-organized analysis to customers, applicants and various Town boards including the Planning Board, Board of Zoning Adjustment, Historic District Commission, Appearance Commission and Town Council. The ideal applicant’s skill set will also include the ability to work independently to conduct research on a variety of topics, meet multiple overlapping deadlines and communicate effectively and clearly with parties representing diverse interests and motivations. Clear and professional written and verbal communication, including comfort with public speaking, is very important. A bachelor’s degree or master’s degree in planning or a related field, or a bachelor’s degree or master’s degree in an unrelated field plus two or more years of professional experience in a related field is typically required, but an equivalent combination of relevant education and work experience may be considered.

The primary purpose of this section is to assist the public and organizations, including: property owners, developers, surveyors, engineers, business owners, attorneys, real estate brokers, other in-house sections, departments and agencies of every level of government, and all other citizens in their understanding of the local development approval process(es) and the necessary steps required for their specific intended use of a parcel of land through interpretation and application of the local development ordinances. The Department of Community and Regional Planning (CRP) in the College of Design at Iowa State University is seeking to fill a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor starting August 16, 2020.
