The successful candidate will work under the supervision of the development services director to enforce the town’s code of ordinances, unified development ordinance and nc building code relating to land use, zoning, minimum housing and nuisances. This position also assists with municipal planning, zoning, and development functions as necessary. Education: four year degree in business, city/urban planning, geography, construction management, criminal justice or related field. The successful candidate will have a minimum of two years of experience in law enforcement, code enforcement, building inspections, urban planning, geography, or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Certification as a North Carolina zoning official (CZO) preferred. The anticipated starting salary range is $43,572-$48,131, depending on qualifications, with excellent benefits including employer provided health insurance and a five percent 401k contribution.

Eastern Carolina Council of Governments seeks a Regional Planning Director. This position supervises a staff of professional planners and technical personnel local government planning services. Responsibilities include working with the member governments, local, state and federal agencies, businesses, NGO’s, non-profit and academic organizations to identify issues and challenges in the region; directing professional staff with a variety of backgrounds and types of projects; providing oversight to project application and program/grant management tasks; providing advice to the Executive Director and Board on ways and means of implementing regional planning and development strategy; developing and recommending adoption of new initiatives, funds, priorities and plans to the Board; and supervising and participating in provision of local technical assistance and development including meeting facilitation, regional and state-wide planning efforts and related activities. Work includes supervising in hosting two RPOs. Work requires extensive knowledge of the planning and development field, of local government structure, needs and problems, and is characterized by independent managerial and professional judgment and initiative; skill in facilitating consensus in varied groups of stakeholders; and budget, staff management and leadership skills. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Executive Director, and is evaluated through conferences, reports, success in receiving funding and in meeting project goals, progress on projects, and feedback from the clients and staff.

Master’s degree in Regional and/or Urban Planning, Public Administration or related field and considerable progressively responsible local governmental or regional planning experience including supervisory experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Possession of a valid North Carolina driver’s license and access to a car on a regular basis that may be required in the performance of work. Hiring Range $62,107-76,894 DOQ. Penn State’s Social Science Research Institute (SSRI) and Population Research Institute (PRI) seek a talented scholar to join their large transdisciplinary POLARIS team. POLARIS, or Pursuing Opportunities for Long-term Artic Resilience for Infrastructure and Society, is a newly funded National Science Foundation project that studies environmental migration, food security, and human-environment conflicts in coastal Arctic Indigenous communities and identifies the important assets (social, environmental, infrastructural, institutional) to help them adapt and become more resilient to climate-related changes. The research is interwoven with education, outreach, local community engagement, international comparison and collaboration, and evaluation. The team is composed of more than 20 collaborators from Penn State, University of Alaska at Anchorage, University of Alaska at Fairbanks, and Michigan Tech. This position will have both project management and research responsibilities. This position will manage and coordinate project activities. This position will also help ensure the team is on track and milestones achieved in a timely, efficient, and effective manner. For research, this position will participate in and collaborate on research activities of this project; this position will also lead research in his/her own research area. The successful candidate will also lead developing new projects or components of them. This position requires a Ph.D. or equivalent degree. Fieldwork experience in the Arctic, especially in coastal Indigenous communities is desired. Some fieldwork experience in remote research settings is a minimum. Candidates from social and natural science fields are all welcome to apply for this position, but the candidate should be comfortable and able to work with researchers and others across a wide variety of disciplines and perspectives. Interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research experience is desired. This position requires an individual who is self-motivated, detail-oriented, responsible, team-oriented, and creative, with excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills as well as research proficiency, and ability to multi-task.
