About our opportunity:

The City of Asheville is seeking recent university graduates for a full-time, one-year Transit Apprenticeship with the Transportation Department, Transit Division. The apprentice will gain real-world work experience and become familiar with the City of Asheville, Asheville Rides Transit (ART) transit routes and the role transit plays in our transportation network. The apprentice will work individually and as part of a team to assist transit planning staff with everyday project management such as: transit service improvements, facility and bus stop shelter and amenity improvements, data collection and analysis, fare changes, community engagement, and general implementation of the City’s 10-year Transit Master Plan.

The apprenticeship also includes the development of an individual project that both focuses on the interest of the student and meets the goals of the division.

Work Schedule:

This position generally works 7.5 hours Monday through Friday, starting between 8:30 a.m., and ending around 5:00 pm. Occasionally, there may be times when the Transit Apprentice can work additional hours, depending on public outreach meetings.

Salary and Benefits:

Duties & Responsibilities
Essential Functions:

  • Participate in data analytics and maintenance.
  • Conduct transit service surveys.
  • Collect and analyze service data (i.e., ridership, revenue, hours, and miles).
  • Prepare outreach materials for the Transit Committee and other community engagement meetings
  • Complete independent research or a special project.
  • Work on special projects based on the specific needs of the transit system and your interests and skills.
  • Examples of projects include bus stop improvement projects, route and schedule updates, fare policy and technology analysis, and other studies involving market research or service productivity.

Education & Experience
Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED required
  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • Interest in public service, transportation and/or transit planning
  • A college transcript and letter of reference is required to apply

Duties and Responsibilities
Work on special projects to support the public engagement and research work of the division, which may include:
Supporting implementation of the city’s Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system through planning projects and city initiated rezoning initiatives
Participating in the department’s efforts to initiate and refine a data dashboard
Researching best practices to develop a preliminary outline for stabilization planning playbook.
The intern experience includes a staff mentor and broad exposure to a wide range of public planning-related processes, such as governing body, board/commission, and internal departmental meetings.
Typical Qualifications
Education:
Must be a student enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program in good academic standing.

Experience:
No previous office experience required.

Preferred Qualifications:

Preservation North Carolina is Currently Accepting Applications for the Myrick Howard Preservation Internship This Summer!

The Intern will conduct property inspections during the summer (May to July), working closely with the Properties Director and Regional Directors, attend weekly staff meetings and assist with membership events as needed.

Work location and schedule: This is an hourly position (25 hours per week) at $15.00 per hour that will be primarily remote work with some in-office work possible, either in Tarboro, Raleigh, Durham or Lincolnton based on the candidate’s location. PNC’s typical business hours are Monday through Friday from 9:00am to 5:00pm with the potential for occasional earlier/later hours to accommodate property owner schedules.

The Town of Apex is looking for enthusiastic and multi-talented Masters of Landscape Architecture (MLA) or Master of City and Regional Planning (MCRP) students to help us continue making our community “the peak of good living.” The interns’ daily responsibilities will be to assist the Parks Planning Project Manager with various tasks and projects. The intern will play an important role in our continued efforts to evaluate, review, and plan the town’s parks and greenways. Specifically, the internship will include working with Parks Staff along with various departments as a part of the Technical Review Committee as well as assisting PRCR staff members in updating and maintaining inventories of park facilities and greenway trail and amenities. The Parks Department is wrapping up an update to the Parks, Recreation, Greenways and Open Space Master Plan and the intern will be working with staff to update maps and begin implementation of the plan. The Parks and Greenways Planning staff will also be actively involved in the oversight of construction of several major greenway corridors in town and the intern may be asked to complete site visits, document project status through photos, updates to social media, and provide materials to assist contractors and staff. Two exciting projects will begin public engagement to develop site plans including a renovation of West Street Park at the edge of the extending downtown activity area and a Hunter Street Park Bike Track.

Additionally, the intern may be asked to assist with general office work, interact with various boards and committees, attend public meetings, handle research inquiries, and perform other duties as assigned to gain valuable professional experience.

A successful applicant will possess excellent design, communication, data collection, time management skills, the ability to perform and interact in a team environment, and a desire to learn. Proficiency in ArcMap/ ArcGIS Pro, AutoCad, Adobe Creative suite a plus.

The Town anticipates hiring an MLA/ MCRP candidate for a minimum 32-hour per week summer internship (June – August) that will transition into a part-time internship (10-hrs per week) when the academic year resumes.

Assisting staff in final updates to the Oakwood historic designation report.  This will include copy editing, photography and quality control for over 600 property entries.  As time permits, the intern will propose next steps and do additional research on non-regulatory historic designation and celebration programs.  This would be a follow-up to an initial report prepared in Summer 2023.

Must be enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program and a student in good academic standing. Preference for students enrolled in a program leading to a degree in Historic Preservation, Architectural History, Anthropology, History, Urban Planning, Archaeology, and/or Architecture. The Urban Design/Planning Intern will work under the City of Raleigh Department of Planning and Development’s Urban Projects Division in Downtown Raleigh. The Urban Projects is a newer division of the Planning & Development Department, dedicated to catalyzing and accelerating the transition from plan vision to physical reality through internal coordination, external partnerships, and problem solving. Duties and Responsibilities

The Urban Design/Planning Intern will assist senior staff at the Urban Projects Division with the development of design and planning related research, reports, illustrative plans, 3-dimensional analysis and modeling studies, and assist with other related divisional tasks as needed.
