The City’s Corridors of Opportunity Program in Charlotte, NC is seeking motivated college students to participate in its Summer 2024 Internship Program. The ideal candidate will be a student in good academic standing with an enthusiasm for learning, strong interpersonal, written and verbal communications skills and a sincere interest in learning about cross-collaborative place-based investment. Candidates should be a rising undergraduate or graduate student at an accredited school during the 2024-2025 school year and available to work up to full time (40-hour week) beginning May through August 2024. Selected candidates will be compensated at a rate of $19-24/hour depending on academic status.

This is an exciting opportunity to work closely with the Corridors of Opportunity team which provides strategic direction and engagement for the City of Charlotte’s investments into six priority corridors. The Corridors program interacts across city departments, other public agencies, non-profit service providers and place-based organizations. You will gain critical experience by participating in a variety of projects, engagement activity and policy research and development, preparing documents and reports, attending meetings with city staff and officials as well as community meeting and events hosted by the Corridors team.

We are looking for highly competent students who will produce quality work and are willing to be an integral part of the Corridors of Opportunity team.

Position Summary:

The Natural Areas Conservation Intern (2 positions) will work to support the conservation and restoration efforts of the North Carolina Botanical Garden within NCBG-managed nature preserves. This internship is a great introduction to applied conservation and natural area management and is ideal for undergraduates or recent graduates. The internship provides hands-on experience working mostly outdoors with staff and volunteers to advance the Botanical Garden’s management plans. The intern will learn about local botany, ecology, trail maintenance, land management, and conservation issues, from the perspective of an education-, research-, and conservation-oriented public garden. One intern with outstanding qualifications will be named the Charlotte Jones Roe Conservation Intern in 2024.

Tasks may include:

  • Restoring managed lands by removing invasive plants using hand tools, herbicide, and other methods.
  • Maintaining hiking trails and other visitor-supporting infrastructure.
  • Working with and leading volunteer groups.
  • Occasionally, supporting Conservation department projects such as propagating collections of restoration plants, monitoring plant populations, or processing native seed materials.
  • Other tasks as needed, such as developing interpretive information, providing information to educate visitors, and self-guided research.
  • Some past summer interns have paired UNC summer session courses with this internship experience.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Graduation from high school and some experience in horticultural work; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Special Licensure or Certification: May require North Carolina Pesticide License; North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License.

Position Summary:

The primary focus of the Fred and Virginia Houk Sustainability Internship is to help the North Carolina Botanical Garden improve the sustainability of our native plant greenhouse and nursery operations by helping wash/reuse and recycle plastic nursery pots and trial alternative compostable pots; building/upgrading irrigation infrastructure to increase water efficiency; and trialing/using organic fertilizers, herbicides, pesticides.   2. Supporting the closing of project financing, tracking construction progress, and pre-leasing and leasing activities for projects in the development pipeline,
  3. Conducting research to support new and early-stage projects and programs, and on community needs and real estate markets within the geographies Self-Help serves.

This is a paid internship position from May 22 through July 28 and includes regular learning and socializing opportunities along with the chance to gain meaningful work experience. The ideal intern will be a graduate or undergraduate student with an enthusiasm for learning, strong interpersonal, and written and verbal communication skills, and a sincere interest in nonprofit-work, education, advocacy, or social work, and a passion for socially-responsible real estate development.

Additional qualifications and skills should include experience or familiarity with some combination of real estate development processes, finance, architecture and design, urban planning, and analyzing and interpreting data.

ABOUT THIS POSITION:

WHO WE ARE:

The Town of Stallings is a rapidly growing community in Union County with around 16,000 population. Located in Union County within the Charlotte metropolitan area and close to other important regional cities and job centers, Stallings is on track to become a thriving part of the growth and energy surrounding the Charlotte region. The Stallings Planning Department has three staff members, a Planning Director, Planning Tech, and a Code Enforcement Officer who focus on planning, zoning compliance, GIS, and Code Enforcement.

WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING (DESCRIPTION):

The Planning Intern will gain valuable learning and work experience in areas such as Unified Development Ordinance (UDO) drafting, Comprehensive Land Use Planning, current, and long-range planning, inspections, code enforcement, GIS, and general local government operations, as well as assist with special projects and other duties as assigned by the Department and areas of interest highlighted by the selected candidate. The intern will benefit from hands-on experience with the following ongoing projects and activities: researching and drafting UDO and Comp Plan amendments and for various emerging issues such as but not limited to Transportation Oriented developments, tree save, parking requirements, tiny house developments; GIS projects, and preparation of staff reports and presentation of these UDO and Comp Plan amendments to Planning Board and Town Council; and based on the intern’s interest, opportunities to job shadow and/or work on projects with other town staff to get a well-rounded understanding of local government operations.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED (MINIMUM MUST-HAVES):

The Town anticipates interning a city planning student with excellent communication, research, and time management skills, the ability to perform and interact in a team environment, and a desire to learn. Some GIS experience and proficiency in Microsoft Word are a must.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must perform the basic life operational support functions of stooping physically, standing, reaching, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions.
  • Must be able to perform sedentary work exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.
  • Must possess the visual acuity to compile and compute data and statistics, operate a computer terminal, read extensively, and proofread materials.
