Job Responsibilities

  • Plan and design Bike+ spot projects for SDOT crew delivery identified in the City’s Seattle Transportation Plan and Trails Upgrade Plan to improve safety on our Bike+ and trail network.
  • Help implement Bike Barrier Hardening and Maintenance, a program tasked with replacing flexible delineators in protected bike lanes with physical barriers to enhance protection for cyclists and reduce the City’s ongoing maintenance costs.
  • Support planning, project development, and design for large capital projects stemming from the Bicycle Program by collecting field data, helping organize presentations, and drafting various design alternatives for analysis and review by SDOT staff or other agencies in the design process.
  • Help with bike and scooter share parking design layout, ordering materials, and writing work orders for construction.
  • Review data and designs and summarize essential information to share with the team and help inform design or next step recommendations
  • Coordinate project design with partners like King County Metro, Seattle Public Utilities, Seattle City Light, Sound Transit, and private entities.
  • Conduct field work in various weather conditions
  • Respond to public inquiries on various traffic safety and operational concerns in a professional manner.
  • Provide content and participate in public outreach processes during occasional evening or weekend events.
  • Actively support the department’s goals for diversity and social justice, in line with the City’s Race and Social Justice Initiative.

Minimum Qualifications:
Requires a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Urban Planning, Transportation Planning or a related field (or a combination of education and/or training and/or experience which provides an equivalent background required to perform the work of the class).

Though not requirements, strong candidates will have some of the following experience or are able to describe comparable experience:

Knowledge and experience with urban transportation planning concepts like multi-modal design, Vision Zero goals, bike network planning and the Safe-Systems Approach.
Familiarity with City of Seattle, WSDOT, AASHTO, and NACTO pedestrian and bicycle design standards.
Detail-oriented with strong organizational, time-management and customer service skills.
Proficient in MS Word, Excel and Power Point.
Effective oral and written communication and customer service; proven ability to communicate information clearly, concisely, and accurately to all staff, contractors, vendors and other departments.
Effectively work in multi-cultural workplace with diverse customer base.

Other Requirements:
Starting in 2025, work will be typically performed in a hybrid work environment in which a minimum of 3 days of the work is completed in a City office, and 2 days of the work is completed remotely in a regular 40-hour work week.
Current Washington State driver’s license or evidence of equivalent mobility.
