Graham is located at the geographic center of Alamance County between the Triad and Triangle regions of central North Carolina. The City has recently been accepted into the Downtown Associate Communities (DAC) program, a prerequisite for the North Carolina Main Street program. Graham’s downtown is currently undergoing rapid revitalization, with new restaurants and a brewery recently opening. Population projections estimate that Alamance County will grow 15% by 2030. Future projects of this growing community include updating the Community Profile following the release of new Census Data, organizing Better Block community engagement events, and increasing community participation.

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to be involved in a wide range of activities within the Planning field.
The Planner I assists with coverage in the Planning Department responding to public inquiries and customer service requests. Responsibilities include understanding, interpreting, and communicating with the public about the City of Graham Development Ordinance regulations. This position serves as the primary point of contact for New Business, Sign Permit Review, Zoning Verification Letters, as well as Façade and Business Beautification Grants. As staff liaison this individual provides administrative support to the Historic Resources Commission (HRC) as well as the Appearance Commission but may assist with drafting staff reports for the Planning Board and City Council on an as needed basis. This individual may also provide assistance to the Downtown Development Coordinator with the (DAC) program.
Duties include a wide variety of tasks related to current and long-range planning initiatives such as development regulation updates, land development application review, grant writing, and analysis regarding planning and development issues. Work is performed under the supervision of the Planning Director.

 

Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s Degree in Planning, Geography, Public Administration, or a related field with one year of planning-related experience is preferred.

As a member of a small team, the successful candidate will have strong research, data analysis, customer service, and time management skills. Exceptional oral and written communication and experience with the Microsoft Office Suite is required. Some experience with Adobe Creative Suite, ArcGIS, and WordPress is preferred.

Starting salary: $41k to $51k annually, DOQ. EOE.
