Description
Performs professional work on a wide range of transportation, development and land use planning assignments for the Town. Work involves the application of professional knowledge and skills in various municipal planning situations. Work is performed under the general supervision of the long-range planning manager.
- Reviews site plans, preliminary subdivisions, and construction plans for compliance with applicable transportation-related plans and ordinances.
- Coordinates and reviews the preparation of Transportation Impact Analysis reports by consultants for proposed development projects.
- Works with Town staff, consultants and others to prepare updates to Transportation Plan, studies, and analyses for the Town.
- Provides assistance to citizens, developers, and public officials regarding transportation-related matters.
- Coordinates data collection and other research such as traffic counts, regional model data, etc.
- Coordinates with planning and engineering staff in neighboring jurisdictions on transportation planning issues.
- Develops and maintains inventory of transportation projects (both large and small) using GIS.
- Maps transportation improvements (such as new bike lanes and sidewalks) for inclusion into GIS system.
- Conducts analysis utilizing GIS and transportation modeling software.
- Provides graphical support for the department by utilizing graphic design software.
- Participates in cross-jurisdictional transportation-related meetings (i.e. CAMPO, Wake Transit, NCDOT).
- Reviews NCDOT project plans and provides comments and suggestions.
- Assists other planning staff with special projects.
Typical Qualifications: A general knowledge of transportation planning; general knowledge of the concepts, principles, techniques and legal aspects of municipal planning; ability to read and interpret ordinances, statutes and plans; general knowledge of GIS and other transportation modeling software; general knowledge of graphic design and associated software; ability to make recommendations based on findings in studies and field observations; ability to present written and oral information in a clear, concise and effective manner; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with public officials, the general public, employees, developers, consultants and others; ability to work independently with minimal direct supervision; ability to simultaneously manage multiple projects; ability to be a problem solver; ability to work effectively as part of a team; strong customer service mentality.
Supplemental Information: A Bachelor’s degree in city and regional planning, transportation planning, civil engineering, landscape architecture, public administration, geography, or a related field, and 1-2 years of experience in transportation planning. A Master’s Degree may be substituted for 1 year of experience.
