Earlier this month, students in the DCRP’s PLAN637 (Public Transportation) got the opportunity to travel to Greensboro to observe the public transit system in the region and observe its strengths and areas for improvement.

The course, taught by Professor Matthew Palm, examines public urban transportation systems from economic, social, and policy perspectives. Students in the class talked with riders about their experiences riding with GoBoro, the local transportation system operator, and asked them about their preferences and wishes for improvements that could be made to the system. Students were also able to talk about transportation solutions for Greensboro with Karen Simon, a consultant leading the transit planning process for the region.

Finally, students were able to tour the campus of North Carolina A&T, where they were able to ride the newly introduced AggieAuto self-driving shuttles. They also spoke with engineers of the project, who gave insight into the challenges of developing the shuttles and addressing the needs of students, faculty, and others who will use the vehicles.
