Measuring and Managing the Impacts of a Changing Climate
Prof. Miyuki Hino

All are Welcome

Climate change is now widely understood to pose a threat to economic stability and development around the world. But how and where will the impacts materialize, and how can we respond? Researchers continue to discover many, often surprising relationships between the climate and economic productivity, human wellbeing, and even performance on math tests. In this talk, I’ll describe this growing body of work and highlight some key remaining knowledge gaps. I’ll also do a deeper dive into my work on the economic impacts of coastal flooding to demonstrate how we have learned about these diverse consequences of climate change. Finally, I’ll close with a brief discussion of how we can adapt to the changing climate and reduce these impacts.

Bio:  Miyuki is an environmental social scientist working on increasing the resilience of communities to the impacts of climate change. Her research examines the linkages between natural hazards, governance, and public policy, with a particular focus on sea level rise and flooding. She received her Ph.D. from Stanford University’s Emmett Interdisciplinary Program in Environment and Resources and a B.S. in chemical engineering from Yale University. Before graduate school, she spent several years supporting evidence-based climate change adaptation and mitigation decision-making, most recently at the New Climate Economy and ICF International.
