Title: Still Waters Run Deep: The Social Dimensions of Urban Flood and Stormwater Infrastructure Resilience
Abstract: Dr. Marccus Hendricks will discuss the social dimensions of urban flood and stormwater infrastructure resilience as it relates to marginalized communities that are often disadvantaged and lacking in support. Based on several research projects, he will discuss urban flooding and stormwater infrastructure at the neighborhood-level, looking at minor systems designed for everyday nuisance flooding, which also support flood mitigation during heavy and stalled rainfall events. Additionally, he will discuss how repetitive flood exposures may lead to decreased quality of life and perpetuating disparities. Essentially, the extent to which flooding reduces the quality and serviceability of infrastructure, and whether repeated flooding creates a negative cycle prohibiting social mobility among the socially vulnerable. Lastly, he’ll introduce his new work exploring how climate-related disasters cascade into public health crises by way of toxic flood waters and disrupted critical infrastructures and how citizen scientists can be activated in non-hazardous scenarios to monitor risks.
