General Description: To investigate potential violations and enforce municipal and zoning ordinance regulations related to nuisance abatement, animal control, abandoned/junk vehicles, grass height, minimum housing, signage, and zoning regulations.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Administers Town’s Minimum Housing program, as needed; Responsible for the administration of all required notifications and subsequent hearings to ensure properties are brought into compliance with minimum housing standards.
  • Works in coordination with other code enforcement staff in a team environment.
  • Responsible for overall administration and enforcement of Unified Development Ordinance and Town Municipal Code.
  • Performs investigative field work to determine violations of Town ordinances.
  • Issues violation notices, explains violations to citizens and business owners, and identifies alternatives to come into compliance with Town ordinances.
  • Communicates verbally in a clear and tactful manner and explains ordinance requirements in a manner that is understandable by the general public.
  • Conducts field inspections of residential and non-residential sites for compliance with approved zoning and land development permits.
  • Writes compliance letters and other written communications in a clear and concise manner.
  • Maintains detailed case files and reports in an organized manner related to inspection and enforcement activities.

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of materials, methods, and the tools involved in the construction of houses, buildings or other structures; Knowledge of planning principals and zoning regulations; Ability to read and interpret site and subdivision plans, building plans, and land surveys; Ability to learn ordinances and approval procedures applicable to zoning permits and building construction and alteration; Ability to prepare clear and concise reports and other communication pieces; Ability to issue minor zoning permits with adequate training; Ability to safely operate a motor vehicle to attend meetings and visit properties; Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other Town employees and officials, outside agencies, citizens, and business owners; Ability to present ideas effectively orally and in writing; Ability to use permitting software as well as Microsoft Office programs.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE: A high school diploma or equivalent and three years experience as a code enforcement official. Prior experience in building inspections and enforcement of minimum housing regulations is preferred.  Any equivalent combination of education, experience and training that provides the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities will be considered.
