Position Summary

The Grants Manager (GM) will centralize the management of all grant activities. Because TLC staff are excellent grant writers and will continue to do some of the writing, it is a highly collaborative position that works closely with Philanthropy, Finance, Land Protection, and Stewardship departments on government, corporate, and foundation grants. The GM will do grant research and analysis, coordinate application writing and reporting, as well as provide ongoing oversight to ensure compliance with grant-specific requirements and serve as a resource for staff of grant-funded programs for fiscal and programmatic matters. The GM will ensure that funder standards are met or exceeded and that the implementation of the project aligns with TLC’s standards and grant requirements where applicable.

Grant research and Application

  • research grant opportunities from the governmental, foundation, and corporate funders.
  • create and maintain a grant database
  • make connections between departments and funding sources
  • work closely with appropriate departments to draft and edit grant applications and provide relevant support documentation
  • coordinate grant application process and write and edit applications as needed
  • manage and maintain general grant documents to support all grant applications

Grants Management 

  • conduct appropriate due diligence for grants including reviewing proposals and budgets, monitoring the progress of grant applications to ensure timelines are met, complete pre-award, award and post-award reporting requirements
  • ensure that conditions, compliance and reporting requirements of grants align with TLC’s ability to meet those conditions, compliance, and requirements
  • develop standard reporting templates and tools that will support improved narrative and reporting
  • maintain an orderly and up-to-date filling system for key documents including but not limited to grant proposals, awards, agreements, contracts, support documents, budgets, binding documents and other relevant documents
  • leads and/or participates in special projects as needed, including the annual report

Grants monitoring and compliance

  • develop and modify policies/procedures/systems in accordance with grant requirements and organization needs and objectives
  • assist in preparation for annual independent audit and any other funder visit, review or evaluation as appropriate
  • provide support to staff to prepare, review and/or analyze grant agreements and reports
  • track progress on grant initiatives and facilitate monthly grant status meetings
  • ensure appropriate staff provide reports as needed
  • track and appropriately codify payments for easy identification and deposit
  • support development staff in tracking grants, payments, and contracts in donor tracking software
  • maintain conditional, federal and state grant schedules
  • support project staff in requested changes and or extensions to grant agreements
  • conduct routine compliance reviews of grant programs
  • provides links between Land Protection, Finance and Advancement teams so that all activities related to grant data collection and reporting are smoothly implemented

Essential Experience, Technical Skills, and Competencies

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience
  • three+ years related to experience managing and writing grant applications
  • excellent research and project management skills
  • familiarity with environmental sustainability the Triangle region of North Carolina, and land trusts in general
  • Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal skills; experience writing grant reports
  • proficient using Microsoft office applications and adobe products
  • working knowledge of nonprofit business operations and federal and state grant and contract funding mechanisms
  • Broad base of relevant knowledge and skills related to fund accounting, financial reporting
  • Experience leading and/or working in cross-functional teams
