Long Range Planner

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

New Hanover County is seeking a motivated professional to perform long range planning duties in the Planning and Land Use Department. This position works in coordination with the current and long range planning team to implement New Hanover County’s Comprehensive Plan andother projects and initiatives to promote more efficient development patterns within unincorporated New Hanover County. It requires strong analytical skills, competence in managing multiple ongoing projects, building and developing partnerships with stakeholders to ensure the comprehensive plan vision is achieved; and the ability to clearly communicate technical information through written reports, memorandums, and presentations. Typical work activities include demographic and land use research, policy and data analysis, community-level planning, and public outreach. Duties include evaluating and preparing written reports on amendments to long range plans, development codes, the Official Zoning Map, and other related proposals; serving as a staff liaison in a variety of long range planning focus areas, including transportation; preparing technical studies and reports; and preparing or assisting in the preparation of grant applications.

New Hanover County’s Planning and Land Use department is comprised of a team of dedicated professionals who stay committed to the County’s goal of intelligent growth and economic development by providing services in the areas of short and long range planning and zoning. The department oversees research, planning, and zoning activities to ensure orderly growth and development for New Hanover County. The comprehensive plan is used as a guide, to address our County’s current development trends, determine a vision for how the community would like to see New Hanover County develop over the next twenty five years, and determine a plan for how to achieve this vision.

Our long range planning team is committed to a pragmatic, solution-oriented approach to addressing the ongoing challenges of laying a framework for the next twenty to thirty years of growth and development in the unincorporated areas of the county. We work in a variety of areas, including comprehensive planning, transportation, zoning and development regulation, and are seeking a motivated professional interested in building a broad base of skills and a strong community. As a member of the long range team, you will have the opportunity to work closely with current planning, zoning, and engineering staff, as well as organizational and community partners who focus on public health, transportation, and parks planning.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor’s Degree in Planning or related field and two years of professional level experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above. Master’s Degree strongly preferred.
Must have excellent customer service, oral and written communications skills, and interpersonal skills. Must have excellent computer skills, including the ability to create graphic designs and professional documents. Experience in zoning administration, development review, transportation planning, GIS, and implementation of a comprehensive plan is preferred. Must have good driving record.

LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS:
NC Driver License
AICP preferred – must be obtained within 5 years of employment

OTHER INFORMATION:
Hours are 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM Monday through Friday, with some night and weekend work possible for meetings or public outreach events.
Must be available to work during emergency situations.

Salary Information:
The current salary range for this position is $49,236 – $83,701. The hiring range for this position is $49,236 – $66,469 plus a competitive benefits package. Salary will be determined based on qualifications, internal equity, budget, and market considerations.
