The position is a full-time, non-tenure track appointment. The successful candidate will bring passion and experience in transportation safety and pedestrian and bicycle transportation research and provide leadership for such programs at HSRC. This individual will work with other senior HSRC leadership and the pedestrian and bicycle research staff to sustain and grow existing research programs, to develop new programs of research and training to address emerging issues and technology, and to foster the research culture of HSRC by mentoring junior researchers at the Center. The individual selected will be responsible for developing research ideas, designing studies, managing projects and programs, and developing proposals to secure funding for future work.

Major Responsibilities
– Lead cutting edge research and transportation projects and programs
o Design and conduct research addressing pedestrian and bicycle transportation safety, planning/design, data collection, and program/facility evaluation. This may involve study conceptualization/design, data collection management, data analysis and modeling, and publication of findings.
o Manage project resources, supervise project activities, and maintain client/sponsor relations.
o Disseminate research findings or information through training courses, workshops, webinars, or other formats to a range of technical and non-technical audiences. This may involve leading or supporting development and delivery of curricula related to safety, roadway planning/design, and pedestrian and bicycle related topics.
o Participate in the national and international pedestrian and bicycle safety community by publishing in peer-reviewed journals and presenting findings at conferences.

– Provide leadership within HSRC and the broader transportation research community
o Contribute to the pedestrian and bicycle safety research and policy agenda at both the state and national level, as a leader in appropriate professional organizations, advisory groups, and steering committees.
o Develop and foster collaborations with other researchers and faculty on the UNC-Chapel Hill campus and partner institutions.
o Mentor and support the development of junior researchers at the Center.

A master’s or PhD degree in an appropriate discipline, including (but not limited to) civil engineering or planning or a related field is required.

A master’s degree and experience in conducting applied research, including research with an emphasis on transportation safety is required. A doctorate in an appropriate discipline, including (but not limited to) civil engineering or planning or a related field is strongly preferred. In addition, the candidate must have 5 or more years of experience managing research projects involving multidisciplinary staff. The successful candidate will have a national scholarly reputation, an established record of publication, and a strong track record of work with federal and/or state agencies. The individual will have experience acquiring and conducting funded research, as well as a breadth of knowledge related to issues in transportation safety such as roadway design, pedestrian and bicycle-related data, performance measurement, and demand modeling. A solid grounding in applied research design and statistical analysis techniques is encouraged. Experience obtaining funding from both DOT agencies and non-DOT sponsors is highly desired.
