The Town of Surf City is currently seeking a part-time GIS position. This position will work approximately 19 hours a week and will work with the Planning and Public Utilities Departments. Applications may be submitted through the Town’s website www.surfcitync.gov .

The GIS Technician manages the Town’s geographic information system (GIS) by collecting and analyzing data, creating maps, manipulating data to serve a variety of purposes, and maintaining the GIS database to ensure it is current. This is a part-time position requiring 20 hours per week.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Collects data points for Town assets as required for the Town’s GIS database.
  • Prepares various reports, forms, maps, and memos as needed for projects.
  • Verifies field information and notifies designated departments regarding updates and corrections.
  • Operates and maintains handheld detection equipment in the designed manner.
  • Produces graphic and tabular data to support current and long-range planning activities.
  • Produces custom maps and displays to show and exhibit GIS data to include determining the appropriate cartographic elements, the layout, and graphical composition.
  • Consults with other local and state agencies regarding GIS projects to respond to the data needs of other organizations and evaluating the data received from other agencies.
  • Coordinates and maintains the Town’s street addressing system.
  • Digitizes geographic data and inputs other non-graphic data for the department.
  • Completes special projects and presentations as assigned.
  • Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.
  • Performs work during emergency/disaster situations.

 

Education and Experience: Bachelor’s degree in geography, GIS, computer science, or related field and two (2) years of experience in GIS applications or a related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above. Certificate in Geographic Information Science (preferred)

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of operation and appropriate usage of equipment; basic map reading; utility locating practices and procedures; GIS; GPS; principles of customer service; basic mathematical principles; modern office procedures, methods, and equipment including computers and handheld mobile devices; principles and practices of record keeping and reporting; occupational hazards and standard safety practices; safe driving principles and practices; geographic information systems principles, concepts and data conversion methods; database management principles; spatial interactions; basic cartography principles; database management principles; and statistical and trend analysis techniques.

Skilled in managing multiple projects; transferring data to the GIS database; interpreting orthophotography; using coordinate geometry to plot metes and bounds; analyzing end-user system and program needs; customer service; solving problems; working well under stressful situations; prioritizing work and projects; maintaining effective work relationships; and communication, interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, the general public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction.
