Description:  Part-time Position – Under the supervision of the Assistant Planning Director.  Primarily responsible as a resource to the general public in all planning and permitting areas. Responsible for processing building permit applications and interacting with county building inspectors to coordinate plan review, permit issuance and certificates of occupancy.

Detailed Work Activities:

  1. Serves as first point of contact for walk-in customers and phone calls.
  2. Answers general questions for processes and services provided by the Planning Department to include permit applications, the technical process of inspection request and procedures.
  3. Processes permits or schedules inspection requests and coordinates with the Building Official as needed.
  4. Processes permit applications and forwards to appropriate staff and department for review.
  5. Develops and maintains automated tracking systems, hard copy files and records.
  6. Prepares public notices or property owner verifications.
  7. Prepares maps, charts, tables of limited complexity.
  8. Reviews, reads and understands construction plans to ensure all Town ordinances are followed as appropriate.
  9. Attends public meetings, assisting other planning staff as appropriate.
  10. Reports all complaints and other emergency information to the proper town staff in a timely manner.
  11. Performs routine office tasks in designated program areas, including data entry, file management, copying and answering telephone.
  12. Assists when necessary other departments during intense work cycles and/or emergency situations, when approved by supervisor.
  13. Performs all other duties as assigned

Desirable Education and Experience:

  1. Graduation from an accredited college or university with an associate’s degree supplemented by major course work in urban planning, geography, public administration, landscape architecture, computer sciences or a related field.
  2. Valid NC State Driver’s License

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  1. Thorough knowledge of planning principles and the Unified Development Code complimented by a basic understanding of common construction practices.
  2. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in written form.
  3. Deal tactfully and courteously with the public yet exhibit considerable firmness and fairness in administration of regulations.
  4. Employee must possess computer skills as they relate to general office functions and common office equipment.
