Planner

The Town of Morehead City, located on the beautiful Crystal Coast in eastern North Carolina, is currently seeking an energetic, self-motivated, creative, and detailed-oriented candidate for the position of Planner.

Morehead City is the largest incorporated town in Carteret County with an estimated permanent population of over 16,000 residents (including its ETJ) and encompassing over sixteen (16) square miles of land area (10 square miles = corporate limits; 6 square miles = ETJ). While tourism remains a major industry in Morehead City, other industries and services including, but not limited to, the NC Port of Morehead City, the Center for Marine Sciences & Technology (CMAST) at NCSU, the Institute of Marine Sciences (IMS) at UNC-Chapel Hill, Carteret Health Care Medical Center general medicine and surgical hospital facility, home of the NC Seafood Festival, retail shopping and restaurants, and a vital downtown area.

This position, under general direction of the Planning & Inspections Director, will provide complex technical work compiling and administering the Town Code regarding land development, subdivision regulation and site plan reviews; maintaining maps and databases; working with the public; and assisting to serve as administrative support for the Planning Board.

Qualifications:

• Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s degree with coursework in planning or related field.
• General knowledge of the principles of planning, land development, zoning, land use, subdivision regulation, etc.
• Experience in planning and GIS preferred.
• MUST BE highly attentive to details, able to perform basic math skills, possess effective verbal and non-verbal communication skills, to include strong writing skills, and have the ability to deal firmly and tactfully with the public.
• Possession of a valid, unrestricted NC Driver’s License required.
• Background testing/drug testing required.

Salary & Benefits:   

• The hiring range for this position is $42,909 to $49,345 depending on experience and qualifications.
