Planner – City of Shelby, NC

The City of Shelby (population 22,000), nestled in the southwestern corner of North Carolina, is currently seeking qualified applicants for the position of Planner. This position is responsible for work that:

• Manages the review process of new developments, change in uses, signs, sidewalks, sidewalk cafes, building additions, and etc.;
• Analyzes, investigates, and makes recommendations on current planning, community development, zoning problems;
• Reviews site plans and permits for consistency with UDO;
• Issues proper permits;
• Develops reports and maps;
• Compiles data related to development standards and practices in other cities;
• Drafts new ordinances;
• Assists in research for long range planning projects;
• Prepares reports and correspondence;
• Prepares and presents material to citizen review committees;
• Files applications utilizing a specialized database;
• Receives and responds to questions regarding land use, planning, and zoning issues, programs, and services; and
• Serves as liaison and provides administrative and technical assistance to various boards and commissions such as Keep Shelby Beautiful Board, Planning and Zoning Board, and Zoning Board of Adjustment.

Qualifications include a Bachelor’s Degree with coursework in urban planning, or related field with experience in city, regional, or urban planning with the ability to present results of research effectively and establish effective working relationships.

The City of Shelby offers competitive salaries and excellent benefits including but not limited to health & dental insurance, 401K contribution, and local government retirement system participation. An entry level employee would start at $23.42 per hour with higher salary awarded for experience.
