The Planning Department is recruiting for a Planning Technician to provide technical and administrative support to the staff, the development community and the public in the administration of specific planning programs and ordinances.  This opportunity allows the selected candidate to enhance our department and further Cary’s vision and strategy.

The right candidate will demonstrate the ability to organize and prioritize tasks, work independently and also exhibit strong collaborative skills with internal and external stakeholders.

Typical Tasks

  • Clerk for the Zoning Board of Adjustment (ZBOA) and Historic Preservation Commission (HPC); Coordinate, schedule monthly meetings; update and record meeting minutes; disseminate a summary of the monthly board meetings; ensure meetings are open to allow public attendance;
  • Communication Strategy & Public Outreach: Collaborate with internal experts and develop communication and outreach strategies in furtherance of the Cary Community Plan; develop communication tools to improve our citizens’ experience;
  • Website Management: Update Planning and Development webpages for public hearing notices and calendar events; ensure that the website is edited for accuracy and appropriate communication to the public, along with required public notices are posted;
  • Coordinate Virtual Neighborhood Meetings: Coordinate and plan dates and location of meeting; prepare presentation materials;
  • Staff Reports: Review staff report attachments (Planning & Zoning, ZBOA & Town Council meetings) for accuracy;
  • Annexation Management and Zoning Verification: Prepare letters to government agencies, including recording documents with the Register of Deeds;
  • Citizen Inquiries: Research property land use questions to respond to citizens; manage assigned 311 cases in Salesforce;
  • Review and issue various permits, including sign permits and Accessory Use Permits;
  • Perform other job-related tasks as required.
