Proposals from professional planning consultants

The Town of Sylva is seeking sealed proposals from professional planning consultants to update our zoning ordinance. The Town commissioned an ordinance assessment to address deficiencies in the current zoning and subdivision ordinance. In conjunction, the ordinance update will include the requirements of North Carolina Statute 160D. The goal of this project is to update the Town of Sylva’s zoning ordinance based on the ordinance assessment so the ordinance is consistent with state and federal statutes, and up to date with contemporary zoning and subdivision practices.

The bid opening will be held Thursday, July 9, 2020 at the Sylva Municipal Hall at 5:00 p.m. Starting July 1^st the request for proposals will be available on the Town of Sylva’s website http://townofsylva.org. Please contact Paige Dowling, Town Manager, at (828)586-2719. The Town of Sylva has the right to reject any and all proposals.

The Town of Sylva is the County Seat of Jackson County, situated amidst the Great Smoky Mountains. Our town, is a Main Street community has many restaurants and shops along its tree-lined streets that comprise the commercial center of Jackson County. The Town of 2,800 people first adopted its zoning ordinance in 1998 and
has amended it from time to time over the past 22 years. The subdivision ordinance was adopted in 2009. However, with many changes over that time in both state statute and North Carolina case law, the Town commissioned an Ordinance Assessment to address deficiencies in the current zoning and subdivision ordinance. In conjunction, the ordinance update will include the requirements of North Carolina Statute 160D. The Town’s Planning Board will serve as the steering committee for this project and Town Staff will provide support.
