Description

Trust for America’s Health (TFAH) is currently seeking motivated undergraduate students, graduate students, or recent graduates for our Spring 2021 internship program (January 2021 – April/May 2021).

Headquartered in Washington, DC, TFAH is a non-profit, non-partisan public health policy, research, and advocacy organization that promotes optimal health for every person and community and makes the prevention of illness and injury a national priority. TFAH envisions a nation that values the health and well-being of all and where prevention and health equity are foundational to policymaking at all levels of society. Priority issue areas at TFAH include public health preparedness, obesity, health equity, substance misuse and suicide, public health funding, population health, and healthy aging – all with an overarching priority on advancing health equity and addressing the social and economic factors that can impact a person’s and community’s health.

The interns will have the opportunity to work and gain knowledge on a range of public health policy-related issues, develop workplace skills, and receive general professional development and mentorship opportunities.

If you are a mission-driven change agent who believes in advocacy, strategic communication, and policy development for social impact, we want to hear from you! During this spring paid internship (January 2021 – April/May 2021), the interns will work for approximately 20 – 32 hours per week. We are seeking a total of two interns for two internship openings in the following departments:

  • Government Relations: TFAH’s Government Relations team builds and maintains relationships with federal executive and legislative officials and works with national partners and policymakers to impact policy change. The Government Relations intern will help with researching and drafting regulatory letters, Congressional background information, and other materials; organizing Capitol Hill meetings, briefings, and webinars; and entering information into a database. The intern will also attend briefings, hearings, meetings and participate in other organizational efforts.
  • Policy Development: TFAH’s Policy Development team conducts research and policy development to inform advocacy and policy change, including through expert convenings that TFAH conducts to develop new policies and build consensus among stakeholders. The Policy Development intern will provide support to public health research projects, research pertinent to public health issues, contribute to the writing of policy reports and other materials, and help plan policy convenings and other meetings. The intern will also attend briefings, hearings, meetings and participate in other organizational efforts.

Note: The interns may provide support to other departments at TFAH as needed.

Requirements
Candidates should be students or recent graduates in public health, public policy, political science, communications or a related field. Demonstrated interest in public health and policy preferred. Excellent writing and organizational skills are required, as well as the ability to work independently within a team environment.

The internship includes a stipend.

How to Apply
Interested applicants can apply for up to two of the internships and should complete this application form.

Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis until the positions are filled, but no later than December 14, 2020.*

* COVID-19: TFAH is closely monitoring updates as it relates to COVID-19 and is following the guidance from local government and health authorities and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The 2021 spring internship may be completely remote, completely on-site, or a hybrid of remote and on-site as to be determined, and in accordance with COVID-19 social distancing guidelines and prevention measures. Furthermore, specific internship activities (e.g., attending briefings, hearings, or meetings) may be modified to remote activities, in accordance with these guidelines. As this is a rapidly evolving situation, we will inform applicants of updates related to the 2021 spring internships and above all keep your health and safety at the forefront of any decisions.
