Founded in 1924, the Odum Institute for Research in Social Science provides training, consultation, and research support services to faculty, staff, and students across the UNC-Chapel Hill campus and beyond. It is led by a half-time UNC faculty member, positioned under the Vice Chancellor for Research, and funded through state/university appropriations and grants/contracts led by Institute staff. The Institute employs approximately 20 full time professional staff and 15-30 part time graduate students.

The Assistant Director for Survey Research and Development plays a key role in supporting, improving, and advancing survey research methodology within the Odum Institute and across the UNC Chapel Hill campus. They provide survey methodology consultation to faculty, staff, and students for purposes ranging from funded research projects to dissertations/theses to administrative surveys and other internal data collection efforts. The Assistant Director works with faculty investigators and external clients to design and carry out quantitative survey data collection for scholarly publications, hiring and overseeing staff for these projects as needed. Finally, the Assistant Director plays a key administrative and instructional role in the Certificate Program in Survey Methodology.

Educational requirements: An advanced degree, minimum of a Masters in survey research or social science research, or related social science discipline.

This position requires at least 5 years of experience directing and conducting mail, web, and mixed mode surveys, including: questionnaire design, web survey programming, data collection, and basic data processing/management.

Qualifications and requirements: The Assistant Director should have experience budgeting, planning, and managing data collection projects and working with Institutional Review Boards. A minimum of 3 years of experience using advanced features of Qualtrics software is required.

Qualtrics Expert Certification and experience as Qualtrics Brand Administrator desired. Experience using SMS, mobile apps, wearables, or other passive data collection devices is preferred. Data science experience such as projects utilizing surveys in combination with social media data, administrative records, or other types of big data is also preferred.
