SUMMARY: In working to put communities and citizens first, the City of Charlotte’s Department of Planning, Design, and Development is committed to creating great places. The Department of Planning, Design, and Development is chiefly responsible for collaborating with community partners, guiding growth, sustaining the natural environment while also designing vibrant and inclusive avenues for citizen enjoyment.

An entry-level position that provides support for the Charlotte Regional Transportation Planning Organization (CRTPO), the Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) for the Charlotte urbanized area, which includes 24 member jurisdictions throughout Iredell, Mecklenburg, and Union Counties. The majority of peer interactions for this position will be with agencies and jurisdictions outside of the department within Iredell, Mecklenburg, and Union Counties. Position will be within the CRTPO Division of the Department. Area of focus will be providing support to key staff on an as-needed basis and enhancing public engagement efforts.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Conduct data collection and analysis, and research of best practices in support of key staff members.
  • Participate in the entry and formatting of datasets related to the CRTPO’s metropolitan planning process. Ability to successfully complete data entry tasks.
  • Research and prepare components for staff reports in support of the CRTPO’s Technical Coordinating Committee and Policy Board.
  • Prepare information for the public using graphics, maps and written documents regarding transportation projects, plans and programs within the CRTPO planning area.
  • Assist with the coordination of public meetings, events and workshops logistics.
  • Assist staff in meeting setup and logistics, including audio/visual technology, and completing meeting summary minutes.
  • Assist webmaster with revisions and updates to the CRTPO’s webpage.
  • Assist in posting relevant content to the CRTPO’s social media accounts to inform the public of transportation planning initiatives within the planning area.
  • Embrace continuous learning, training and self-improvement.
  • Some night and weekend work may be required on a periodic basis.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • The position requires basic knowledge of transportation planning and regional planning concepts, Census demographic data and computer software proficiency, including Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point and Access.
  • Working knowledge of an MPO’s governmental function relative to project prioritization and delivery.
  • Effective communication, both verbally and in writing.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Creative Suite, ability to use ArcGIS 10.2 and familiarity with the geodatabase data model is required.
  • Excellent public speaking and customer service skills.
  • Ability to collaborate within and outside the department to achieve positive impacts on the region.
  • Ability to perform effectively and efficiently with moderate level of supervision.
  • Must be proficient with Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Creative Suite, ability to use ArcGIS 10.2 and familiarity with the geodatabase data model.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATION:  Bachelor’s Degree in Urban Planning, Urban Design, Architecture or Landscape Architecture, may be substituted for experience.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Associate’s degree in Planning, Architecture, Geography, Landscape Architecture, Engineering, Political Science, Public Administration, Social Science or related degree with one (1) year professional planning experience required.

SALARY: $52,526 – $60,000 Commensurate with Experience
