The Environmental Finance Center (EFC) at UNC’s School of Government is dedicated to enhancing the
ability of governments and other organizations to provide environmental programs and services in fair,

In support of our mission, the EFC seeks to hire a graduate research assistant to assist the EFC team on
several data projects, including developing tools that can allow water and wastewater utilities to provide
affordable services and make the necessary improvements needed so that clean water can be
distributed throughout their communities. The student will also be expected to conduct applied
research on EFC projections relating to affordability, regionalization, integrated planning of wastewater
and stormwater management, and environmental justice in environmental finance.

Duties include:
• Assisting with data analysis and data visualization as needed
• Establishing connections to data sources and adding or creating dimensions, measures, and
calculations in Tableau
• Independent research to support EFC projects under the guidance of EFC Project Directors
• Contribute to writing of report and guidance documents components and blog posts
Role requirements:
• Problem-solving ability
• Ability to communicate professionally with stakeholders for interviews and case studies
• Proficient in Excel with an understanding of how to create and use pivot tables
• Able to work independently and produce results, especially while working remotely
• Willingness to become familiar with water, wastewater, and stormwater utility terminology and
correspond with colleagues who are subject matter experts
Preferred Experience:
• Pursuing graduate degree in information science, environmental sciences, environmental
engineering, public health, public policy, public administration, planning, finance, statistics, or
related field
• Experience with Tableau
• Experience with query construction, SQL, or related coding packages such as Python
