You will have the opportunity to work with a small professional staff at the Washington State Economic & Revenue Forecast Council. This position gives you a chance to combine several skills (research, spreadsheet and other computer graphic capability, and economic analysis) in support of the Economic and Revenue Forecast Council staff, work experience for your resume, “state” experience, and a chance for you to grow into your future career!

Duties:

Some of what you will be doing will include

  • The goal of this position is to complete the annual update of the Washington State Economic Climate Study and to publish by the end of the internship
  • Gathering, verifying, displaying, and analyzing data from a variety of sources, primarily the Internet.
  • Updating the data and text of benchmarks for the areas of innovation drivers, business performance, economic growth and competitiveness and quality of life.
  • Identifying new sources of data and update a workbook of the data.
  • Learning about economic data releases by gathering and analyzing new data and providing a brief written analysis (time allowing).
  • Attending meetings where there is opportunity to meet and learn from working economists in state government.

What you will not be doing

  • Working on climate change or global warming;
  • Mining large data sets that require extensive skills in data science.

Qualifications:

  • A sophomore standing in college by the end of the spring quarter;
  • A major field of study in economics;
  • Registered for classes in the fall of 2021;
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills;
  • Proficiency working with the Internet and Microsoft Word;
  • Skilled with the use of spreadsheet software, such as Microsoft Excel, to create and manipulate large or complex spreadsheets, use complex mathematical formulas to calculate data, and link worksheets. Also the ability to import data from other sources, filter lists, and create and format charts and graphs.
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team is essential.
