Description

Chatham County is currently recruiting for a Transportation Planner to join their extraordinary team in one of the fastest-growing counties in North Carolina. This position will perform professional work focusing on implementation of transportation policies outlined within the Chatham County Comprehensive Plan and other regional priorities and initiatives. In addition, this position is responsible for developing or assisting with the development of current, long-range, transportation, and/or other planning activities. Other duties include, but are not limited to:

– Serving as the appointed staff member for regional transportation organization’s technical committees and coordinates with Chatham County elected officials appointed to the regional transportation groups’ boards;
– Reviewing transportation recommendations of Plan Chatham and other regional transportation plans to assist with implementation;
– Providing and/or coordinating transportation planning, GIS (geographical information systems) analysis, and forecasting and/or project management in support of transportation planning, land use and development and program administration;
– Developing and presenting transportation technical documentation and analysis in a format appropriate for Board and Advisory Committee members and the public;
– Serving as the staff liaison to the Transportation Advisory Committee;
– Tracking ongoing NCDOT (North Carolina Department of Transportation) transportation project timelines in Chatham to provide regular updates to staff and the public;
– Coordinating with NCDOT staff regularly on County projects, reports, studies, and analyses;
– Managing the preparation and submission of projects into the Statewide Prioritization Improvement Program (STIP) by working with regional transportation organizations and presenting proposed submissions to the Board of Commissioners;
– Coordinating with NCDOT and regional transportation organizations about the update of the Comprehensive Transportation Plan (CTP) to capture the latest transportation development patterns, population growth, and economic conditions;
– Coordinating with County staff members and NCDOT to prioritize transit, bike/pedestrian, and ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) facility inclusion within residential and non-residential proposals as outlined in the County comprehensive plan;
– Reviewing, recommending and drafting proposed amendments as they relate to transportation planning in Land Use ordinances;
– Representing the County and Planning department at multi-jurisdictional meetings and coordinating with local transit organizations to encourage transit development in Chatham County;
– Prepares and makes presentations to elected officials and advisory boards as assigned.
– Performing research on ordinances, NC general statutes, and statutory authority and
– Managing and administering transportation state and federal grants and special projects.

Minimum Qualifications

The ideal candidate will be a collaborative and innovative leader with a bachelor’s degree with coursework in transportation planning or engineering, regional planning, urban planning, public policy, geography or related field and 2-4 years’ experience in land use planning or an equivalent combination of education and experience. AICP (American Institute of Certified Planners) or the ability to obtain AICP preferred.

Valid driver’s license in the State of North Carolina
Attend night meetings as required
Salary

Grade 67: $65,462
