CMAP is our region’s official comprehensive planning organization. The agency and its partners are implementing ON TO 2050, our newly adopted comprehensive regional plan to help the seven counties and 284 communities of northeastern Illinois implement strategies that address transportation, housing, economic development, open space, the environment, and other quality-of-life issues.  See www.cmap.illinois.gov for more information.

Position Purpose
The Associate will produce analysis on a variety of transportation topics, make committee presentations, and develop policy recommendations. Immediate initiatives include conducting research and helping lead a CMAP task force to implement ON TO 2050 recommendations on emerging mobility technology, utilizing technical skills and applying policy insight. Longer-term assignments will include analysis to implement other aspects of CMAP’s policy and programming agenda, as highlighted in ON TO 2050. Work in this area will connect CMAP’s policies and research on transportation, development, environment, regional economy, and other topics. The Associate will also contribute analysis for local plans as well as investment decisions in transit, highway, and non-motorized transportation facilities. The incumbent will help forge consensus around transportation priorities by working collaboratively with metropolitan planning organization (MPO) member agencies and other CMAP stakeholders.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead stakeholder processes to develop policy recommendations.
  • Conduct literature reviews, best practices research, quantitative analysis, and stakeholder interviews to prepare reports, policy updates, memos and other material to implement and expand on the recommendations of ON TO 2050.
  • Make presentations to CMAP committees and interact directly with stakeholders, including transportation professionals and elected officials.
  • Represent CMAP on task forces, project studies, and at partner organization meetings.
  • Help carry out quantitative analyses of potential transportation strategies and evaluate candidate transportation projects.

Qualifications:

  • An undergraduate degree in Planning, Engineering, Economics, Public Policy, or a directly related field is required; a Master’s degree is strongly preferred.
  • Two to five years of non-intern experience in a research-driven policy, planning, or analytical role is required.
  • Ability to work effectively in an environment using Microsoft Office Suite, with adaptability to other software.
