This class is the seventh level in a ten-level Transportation Series devoted to transportation system maintenance, planning, management and administration. Incumbents provide journey-level professional transportation planning and/or program administration and coordination. As assigned, incumbents may serve as lead workers, assigning work and monitoring work completion.

Hiring Range: $47,902.00 – $57,500.00 (Promotional Hiring Range may vary)
Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Duties:
The Wake Transit Planner position provides technical assistance with responsibilities assigned to the MPO through the Wake Transit program.

The MPO is responsible for transit planning activities including the administration of an adopted project-level concurrence process for projects funded through Wake Transit; managing the Community Funding Area Program, including providing technical transit planning assistance to local towns and agencies, prioritizing projects for funding, and monitoring project progress; managing consultant-led projects for Wake Transit implementation planning; managing the development of the annual Wake Transit Work Plan, including multi-year capital and operating programs; staffing the Wake Transit Planning Advisory Committee (TPAC); maintaining and updating the multi-year Wake Transit Vision Plan; designation of project sponsors; leading evaluations of Wake Transit-funded project performance against adopted performance targets; and maintaining and administering the application of an adopted project prioritization policy.

This is an entry-level position that will report to the CAMPO Wake Transit Program Manager and will assist with all aspects of the MPO’s Wake Transit Plan implementation work. Core responsibilities of the position include providing technical and coordination assistance in the development of annual Wake Transit Work Plans (including Work Plan amendments) and for ongoing management of the Community Funding Area program.

The position will also be responsible for ongoing website maintenance and providing technical assistance for the TPAC’s evaluations of project performance. Broadly, this position will involve providing technical support, research, administration, and coordination with partner agencies to ensure the MPO’s Wake Transit responsibilities are carried out in an efficient and effective fashion. Attention to detail, ability to prioritize and complete tasks with competing deadlines, and ability to produce high-quality work in a fast-paced work environment are essential.

This position is a key member of the MPO’s team focused on delivering quality transit planning services to our member governments and partner agencies. Applicants should have a working knowledge of the principles and practices of regional transportation planning in an urban setting and some familiarity with federal transit and transportation funding programs and practices. An ability to establish and maintain productive professional working relationships with partners including technical staff and the general public is necessary. General knowledge of transit planning principles is helpful.

Applicants should recognize the value of the Wake Transit program as a transformative component of the MPO’s transportation planning work in Wake County, and should be motivated self-starters able to work both independently and in a team environment.

Preference will be given to candidates with Bachelor’s Degree level or higher in a related field (Urban or Regional Planning, Transportation Planning, Public Administration, or similar), and at least one year of experience working in a local or regional planning setting.
Typical Qualifications

Education and Experience
Bachelor’s Degree in urban planning with an emphasis on transportation planning and management, transportation engineering or directly related field and two years of related experience.
OR
An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above, unless otherwise subject to any other requirements set forth in law or regulation.

Licensing/Certifications
Valid Driver’s License may be required

ADA and Other Requirements:
Positions in this class typically require: standing, walking, fingering, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.
Light Work:
Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. If the use of arm and/or leg controls requires exertion of forces greater than that for Sedentary Work, and the worker sits most of the time, the job is rated for Light work.
Working Conditions:
Work is routinely performed in an indoor, office environment.
