Our internships are a unique opportunity for you to gain valuable corporate campaigning and nonprofit experience, cultivate your interests in social justice, strengthen your understanding of a fast-paced campaign organization, and gain critical skills and experience. In the internship, you will learn alongside our dynamic, passionate climate and membership team and learn skills such as power mapping, campaign research, member outreach, and project management. Interns will come away from the experience ready to take action and apply these skills to the social change issues they want to address in their local communities or schools.

As the Summer Climate Intern you will support our organizers by conducting research and analysis needed to develop and implement campaign strategies that are deeply aligned with the needs and priorities of our campaign partners across the Global South. Additionally, you will work with our membership team to engage our members to take action on our climate campaign.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Work directly with campaign organizers to recruit and organize activists at the local, regional, national, or international level, to build grassroots power for the corporate accountability movement;
  • Develop and deepen relationships with campaign allies through the phone, email, and in-person to collaborate on campaigns and events;
  • Respond to requests for information and manage campaign materials;
  • Identify and project manage actions for the Climate Rapid Response Team and engaging our membership in our Campaign to Make Big Polluters Pay;
  • Identify key U.S. elected officials to engage on our work to make big polluters pay;

Qualifications:

  • Experience in organizing, and/or advocacy on the frontlines of the fight for social justice and/or at a campaign-oriented organization;
  • Demonstrated commitment to corporate accountability, race equity, gender justice and social justice issues with a strong climate/global justice lens;
  • Great self-management skills and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team;
  • Excellent and effective written and oral communication skills, French or Spanish-language skills a plus;
  • Strongly seeking candidates who hold Indigenous, Black, Latinx, and/or Global South identities;
  • Ability and willingness to adapt to changing conditions throughout internship due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and shifting campaign priorities;

Position Summary:
NRDC is seeking a Soil Science Intern to work with the Water & Agriculture team in our Washington, DC office. Regenerative agriculture can help the US meet goals for climate change, improve water quality and water use efficiency, enhance biodiversity, and strengthen communities from the farm to the city. Soil health is a key principle of regenerative agriculture, and soil scientists have played an important role in the regenerative movement. Soil science research has been developing quickly in recent years, and we are looking for a soil science student who is as passionate about soil health as we are to help us keep track of the latest research.

Responsibilities:

  • Research and provide a detailed list of notable current soil science research at US universities, focusing on methods of quantifying soil health for environmental indicators like soil carbon.
  • Conduct survey of research funding and policy priorities for soil health research at Historically Black Universities and Tribal Colleges.
  • Work closely with NRDC staff on the Water & Agriculture team throughout internship, attending team meetings and giving regular updates on research findings.
Qualifications:
  • Undergraduate soil science major or minor at U.S. college; land grant university, HBCU, or Tribal College preferred.
  • Skilled at online research, Word and Excel.
  • Good verbal and written communications skills.

Are you passionate about helping solve climate change? Energy is responsible for the vast majority of carbon emissions, which is why it’s so vital that the world transitions to clean energy. As the Energy Communications intern, you’ll help inform the world about the work WRI does to speed up the energy transition. You’ll support the Energy Program communications team with outreach around various projects and products related to renewables, energy efficiency and energy access, such as Energy Access Explorer, the Building Efficiency Accelerator, and the American Cities Climate Challenge Renewables Accelerator. Internship Summary

As the U.S. Energy intern, you will provide research needed to support the Energy Team’s various projects across the U.S., with two of particular focus.  The majority of your work will focus on research support for 1) local county and city school districts planning electrically and financially for electrification of school bus fleets with the Bezos Electric School Bus Initiative and 2) helping with research and delivery of webinar series on curbside charging planning and development for city energy/fleet managers for downtown districts and residential neighborhoods per UPS Foundation outreach goals.

Examples of research support will include best practices and case studies for determining system size and cost of electrical infrastructure equipment for school busses depots and smaller systems attached to existing streetlights in urban areas, financing mechanisms, and emissions benefits of transition away from fossil fuel-powered buses and personal vehicles.

Time permitting, there may be additional research support activities across the Energy Program and WRI’s Ross Center for Sustainable Cities.

Learning Outcomes

The intern will gain experience in the following areas:

  • Providing research support for school districts, counties, and cities looking to procure electric vehicle charging infrastructure
  • Electrical infrastructure charging systems, system sizing for bus fleets and individual personal vehicles

Summary

As the Global Renewable Energy intern, you will provide research and coordination support to the Global Energy Team’s various initiatives, with a particular focus on renewable energy projects (especially solar and wind) across East and Southeast Asia, Latin America, and the United States.

The majority of your work will focus on research support for international projects such as the Clean Energy Investment Accelerator (CEIA), and the Ocean Renewable Energy Action Coalition. Your work will focus on transforming electricity sectors by supporting the team’s efforts to facilitate utility/large-scale energy buyer collaborations on clean energy solutions in traditional, regulated electricity markets and national investment in clean energy in targeted countries. You will help coordinate work plans and facilitate regional learning activities  in collaboration with external partner organizations and key donors, contribute to blogs and WRI knowledge products, research trade publications related to relevant clean energy solutions, and help manage reports through the review and publication process. At the same time, you will also get a chance to learn more about utilities, energy buyers, regulators, donors and other stakeholders, and support other team members as they expand WRI’s work to create and scale clean energy solutions.

Learning Outcomes

The intern will gain experience in the following areas:

  • Providing research support for large energy buyers (such as commercial and industrial customers and national, subnational, and local governments) in their efforts to procure clean energy for their electricity needs
  • Helping prepare case studies of innovative approaches to clean energy deployment in the marketplace
  • Supporting the organization and implementation of events with stakeholders focused on clean energy issues, often across multiple countries
  • Tracking major clean energy market developments including procurement announcements, policy changes, new market rules, or new technologies

The clean energy intern will:

  • Provide technical assistance to municipalities analyzing their energy use and greenhouse gas emissions;

Typical Qualifications

Applicants must currently be enrolled as a graduate (preferred) or undergraduate student studying any of the following: clean energy or climate, urban planning, engineering, public policy, architecture, business, or another related field. The clean energy intern must be personable, have strong writing skills, and possess excellent research capabilities.

Familiarity with clean energy technologies, energy efficiency, resiliency, climate change mitigation and adaptation, and the MA Global Warming Solutions Act and Green Communities Act is preferred. Experience with municipal governance is a plus.

Applicants must be willing to commit at least 15-20 hours per week and be enrolled as a student at the initiation of the internship. This is a paid, part-time internship with flexibility. To qualify as an intern, individuals must be enrolled in a course of study, with ability to provide written verification of their status, and agree to a scheduled end date upon hire.
