Field Data Collection Intern, Transportation Networks

The Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning (CMAP) is seeking to hire three (3) field data collection interns during the summer of 2021 to assist with transportation system data collection in support of CMAP and its partner agencies.  The interns will be responsible for collecting data to fulfill agency needs, described in detail below.

Essential Functions

• Visual inspection of aerial photography and accurate data entry into CMAP ArcGIS platforms in support of regional road,traffic signal, and sidewalk inventories.
• Conduct road pavement and streetscape conditions inventory as directed by CMAP staff
• Conduct elements of transportation studies related to railroad crossing performance
• Installing devices to collect speed data at locations of interest
• Installing video camera equipment for vehicular (passenger and truck) and non-motorized (bicycle and pedestrian) traffic/utilization counts ranging from 6 hours to 24 hours. With formatting of traffic/usage related reports and geocoding into CMAP ArcGIS archives.

Field data collectors will receive work instructions and assignments from the Project Manager for Summer Field Data Collection – Transportation Networks.  Work activities will be nearly evenly divided between the CMAP office and outside field locations throughout the seven-county CMAP region.

Travel expenses incurred traveling to field data collection locations and during the course of scheduled data collection activities will be reimbursed; field data collection interns will be expected to keep accurate records of their work travel activity.  Mileage reimbursement  is $0.58 per mile.

Qualifications and Skills:  Field data collectors will travel to field data collection locations by various means, including automobile, public transportation, and Uber/Lyft. A valid driver’s license and proof of vehicle insurance for any vehicle to be driven must be provided at time of interview.  Applicants should have proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, including Outlook and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) such as ArcGIS and associated software.  Field Data Collection Interns will not be under direct supervision while in the field on their assigned task.  A high level of individual responsibility is expected and self-motivation should be evident.

Education and Experience: Applicants should currently be enrolled in a bachelor’s degree program.

Equipment: All or part of the work will be done remotely therefore interns will need access to a Windows computer, in good working order.  However, to promote a diverse, equitable and inclusive work environment, and create professional development opportunities for interns, we will support interns with specific technology limitations with the use of a CMAP issued laptop with the expectation that it be returned upon conclusion of the internship.
