Summary
The Transportation Planning Division is seeking a motivated and organized self-starter to fill the role of Transportation Planning Assistant. This position is responsible for working with Town staff on transportation planning projects, multimodal data analysis, Vision Zero, transportation demand management (TDM), demographics studies, and GIS data management.

The position offers exposure to local government transportation planning focused on bicycle, pedestrian, and transit, and oversight from transportation planning professionals. The successful candidate will have opportunity to work with planners from multiple disciplines, other Town departments, as well as private sector firms.

Essential Functions
– Assist with data collection activities and analysis in the office and/or field
– Analyze and visualize data in an engaging and user-friendly manner
– Assist with transportation demand management projects and outreach
– Support Town’s Vision Zero initiative and participate in task force operations
– Prepare brief memos explaining methodology and findings
– Assist with public outreach, meetings, surveys, focus groups, etc.
– Prepare presentations and other materials for public consumption
– Conduct research to assist staff, especially on peer city best practices that may lead to local policy, process, or infrastructure change
– Assist staff on larger projects of interest (ex: development ordinance rewrite, area plan development, placemaking efforts, safe routes to school)
– Collect, enter, tabulate and analyze demographic and performance data
– Support other transportation planning projects and initiatives as needed and as interested

Minimum Qualifications
The ideal candidate should have one of the following qualifications:

  • completed a BA/BS in Urban Planning, Transportation Planning, Public Policy, Geography, or a related degree.
    be currently enrolled in a graduate planning program; or
    recently completed a graduate planning program.
    Proficiency in MS Office, Adobe products (including Illustrator and InDesign), and GIS is strongly preferred.

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION:

This position offers two types of employment opportunities:

Summer employment only: This option offers a full time (40 hours per week) position beginning mid-May/early June 2023 and ending mid-August 2023.
Summer employment extending into the academic year: this option offers a full-time (40 hours) position beginning mid-May/early June 2023 and converts to part-time (10-15 hours per week) beginning mid-August 2023.

Physical Demands:

Work is generally performed while sitting at a desk with intermittent standing or stooping. An incumbent in this position might also be required to lift light objects occasionally.

OTHER NECESSARY REQUIREMENTS:

A valid driver’s license or access to occasional personal transportation is required for this position for off-site meetings or field work.
