Overview of Executive Director responsibilities:

Qualifications
The Executive Director should have at least two years administrative experience in a non-profit history, cultural arts, or tourism organization with a BA or advanced degree in historic preservation, history, tourism or related field preferred. The ideal candidate must have excellent written and verbal abilities; competence with all aspects of a not-for-profit organization, including financial management, fundraising, marketing, public relations, and social media skills; attention to detail; keen organizational skills; willingness to take initiative; outgoing and personable manner; and ability to communicate with diverse stakeholders and members of the public. Knowledge of computer systems, data and software including MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, Adobe (Photoshop and Spark), Canva, and QuickBooks. Salary and benefits are commensurate with experience.

Starting Salary Range: $40,000-47,000 plus benefits commensurate with experience.

General Statement of Duties

This position is responsible for the management of a non-profit organization that works in tandem with the City of Roxboro to implement the North Carolina Main Street Program’s community-based revitalization initiatives in Uptown Roxboro. Distinguishing Features of the Class

This position works closely with the Uptown Roxboro Group (URG) Board of Directors, and serves as the Executive Director for the non-profit organization. Work is supervised by the Planning & Development Director, but the position requires autonomous implementation of the specific goals and programs of the Uptown Roxboro Group and NC Main Street Program. As a liaison to the Uptown business community and representative of two organizations, this position must balance the duties and responsibilities associated with public communication and interaction, records retention and proper implementation of local government regulations, and representation of a non-profit organization with an independent board. This position also requires flexibility in work schedule, as there will be weekend, evening, and holiday commitments associated with essential job duties.

Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Duties and Tasks
• Conducts research and implements the principles of the NC Main Street Program through strategies of Organization, Promotion, Design, and Economic Vitality
• Applies for and administers details of grants
• Collects statistics and maintains a database of information such as Uptown property owners, available spaces for rent or purchase, volunteer hours, average rent rate, etc.
• Communicates with business owners, residents, property owners, developers, and government representatives to gather and disseminate information about Uptown Roxboro goals, needs, and initiatives
• Works with the URG Board, community members, and other stakeholders to implement the vision for revitalization of Uptown Roxboro through a variety of methods and programs
• Assists with preparation of agendas and information packets for the URG board, and serves as a voting or ex-officio member of other community boards, as the representative for URG
• Researches and drafts recommendations; attends meetings to make presentations, and represents the City of Roxboro and Uptown Roxboro Group in the community at-large.
• Responsible for the planning, coordination, marketing, and direction of various special events in Uptown Roxboro
• Assists in maintaining URG websites and social media accounts

Who We Seek
An individual passionate about empowering rural communities to grow their outdoor tourism and associated small business sector. The selected candidate will utilize a highly regarded, nationally recognized framework, Trail Towns, to aid in the sustainable revitalization of trail towns positioned along the Haw River corridor. The Economic Development Specialist must have a positive, customer-focused orientation, be able to deliver high-quality products in a timely manner and have an ability to collaborate with local government staff, stakeholders, and nearby business owners.
Description of Work
This position is funded by a grant award from the U.S. Department of Commerce Economic Development Administration (EDA). Funding is for the development of a corridor feasibility and economic impact analysis to determine how to best leverage the Haw River. As part of this investment, an Economic Development Specialist will be hired to support the Haw River Trail Towns initiative. Under a 20-month contract, the Economic Development Specialist will provide technical assistance throughout the Haw River region to augment opportunities in the retail, accommodation, food and beverage, tourism, outdoor recreation, and entertainment sectors to help them recover from the COVID pandemic. The position will have an office in Graham (Alamance County), Pittsboro (Chatham County), and Durham, (Triangle J Council of Governments), in addition to hybrid opportunities as able.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to;
• Conduct outreach with businesses along the Haw River and work alongside them to create proactive business recovery and expansion plans. In places where a trail is not yet built, the Specialist will work with nearby businesses to develop strategies that maximize economic potential and prioritize infrastructure needs for future development.
• Identify what gaps are missing along recognized trail towns and ways to broaden new or existing markets for products and services.
• Identify strategies to help build and deploy needed capital to nearby trail town businesses and local governments.
• Track and evaluate efforts throughout the process that quantify success and highlight what did not work. Indicators will be relevant, replicable, and measurable, and will be used beyond the life of the grant award.
• Assemble strategies related to support for trail town startups and how to best implement and encourage the advancement of innovative products and services to full-time jobs and businesses.
• Work on building upon a concentrated effort that pulls in government representatives, stakeholders, and businesses along the Haw River to lengthen the impact of the Haw River Trail Towns in years to come.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
The Economic Development Specialist should have a basic understanding of the economic development discipline and practices, in addition to a general interest in asset-building and nature-based community development. The position requires effective communication skills in both oral and written forms. This includes presentations to elected officials and the public, and an ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with elected and appointed public officials, members of the public, and other stakeholders. The selected individual must be able to maintain cooperative relationships with businesses and developers and should demonstrate an ability to effectively evaluate and recommend the implementation of improved practices to local communities, businesses, and stakeholders, in relation to trends and needs. Independent judgment and initiative, with limited supervision and creativity are required in the performance of duties. The selected candidate must be able to serve as the liaison between multiple project partners, providing organization of project assignments and materials. The position requires knowledge of the use of common programs such as Microsoft Office, Teams, and Adobe and possession of a valid North Carolina driver’s license is required. Geographic Information System (GIS) skills are a plus but are not required.
Education and Experience
Required: Any combination of training, education, and experience equivalent to graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree in Economic Development, Community Development, Business or Public Administration, Urban and Regional Planning, Marketing, Research, Analytics, Natural Resources, Environmental Science, or a similar field or an equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Starting Salary & Benefits

Hiring Range: $ 45,858 – $48,150
(Employee will be eligible for a 5% increase after serving a 6-month probation period.)

The Institute is seeking a diligent, flexible, and highly motivated individual to support ongoing research and projects analyzing sustainable, responsible, and impact investing trends in the United States and supporting the Racial Equity, Economics, Finance & Sustainability (REEFS) program, as well as other programs as needed. There is also the potential for deeper integration with other areas where the Institute works, including our food, farming, and forestry finance projects, just climate solutions, and frameworks and data analytics initiatives.

Responsibilities

  • Work with senior staff to analyze and interpret data on sustainable, responsible, and impact investing trends, with a focus on racial equity investing.
  • Work with the senior team to conduct qualitative and quantitative research, through a combination of publicly available sources, surveying, and phone interviews, on money managers and institutional investors that incorporate environmental, social, and governance (ESG) criteria into investment analysis, decision-making, and advocacy
  • Assist with the development, population, and maintenance of customized databases relevant to impact investment, sustainable investing, and other forms of ESG investing, including our RAISER online research platform
  • Provide support to research and educational projects focused on ESG investing themes, such as climate solutions and clean energy, sustainable food, and agriculture systems, gender lens investing, diversity and inclusion, business and human rights, community development finance, place-based investing, and the impact of investor engagement
  • Shape and participate in stakeholder workshops, multi-day conferences, and other convenings
  • Assist with online and in-person event logistics
  • Create content for a website, newsletters, and social media communications
  • Regularly communicate with network and project partners
  • Contribute to and edit Institute reports and publications

Qualifications and Expectations

  • Outstanding relevant academic record with a Master’s degree and 2-3 years of experience or Bachelor’s degree with 5-8 years of experience. Relevant degrees or minors could include Black or other ethnic studies, social sciences, environmental sciences, finance, economics, or business
  • Exceptionally strong research, writing, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Familiarity with sustainable finance and impact investing, and with the range of ESG issues across the field.
  • Experience in environmental sustainability and social equity, and a strong interest in the Institute’s mission and programmatic work, including racial equity, regenerative and organic food, farming, and forestry systems, climate change, human rights, institutional accountability.
  • Strong analytic and quantitative skills, with scrupulous attention to detail when handling complex datasets.
  • Ability to follow the evolving ESG policy and regulatory landscape, and any related implications for the industry
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively with a team across multiple projects and time zones.

Compensation Associate
