Description

The Southern Environmental Law Center is seeking a current university student with geospatial data analysis experience to research, build, and update databases relating to hazardous sites in the Southeast and their adjacent communities. Likely topics may include, but are not limited to, industrial facilities in floodplains, sources of toxic industrial chemicals, historic and active community identities, and the role of carbon storage.

Internship Responsibilities

  • Research sources of geospatial data on project themes in six Southern states (AL, GA, NC, SC, TN, VA)
    • Write memos describing the state-level or local-level processes through which data are collected and documented.
    • Identify points of contact from whom we could acquire data.
  • Take data acquired from state/local agencies and prepare it for analysis. Data will arrive in a variety of formats that may include spreadsheets, pdfs, webpages, APIs, or spatial data. Data will need to be standardized, cleaned, and tested for completeness
  • Document the sources and processes for standardizing data across the six-state region. Create comprehensive metadata for datasets developed during the internship
  • Work with SELC staff to integrate data into existing geospatial data systems.

Skills Desired

  • Experience collecting and using data from public sources, especially state and local governments
  • Data collection and analysis, preferably in a scripted environment such as R or python.
  • Experience using a GIS, preferably ArcGIS pro, to manage geospatial data.
  • Data management and organization, including a familiarity with best practices in writing

    metadata and project documentation.

  • Basic understanding of environmental justice and environmental racism
  • Ability to collaborate on team projects
  • Ability to work remotely (while office reopening is still underway due to COVID-19)

This is an entry-level position responsible for completing planning processes and projects that rely heavily on using GIS and other spatial analytics tools. In particular, this position provides support in applying information and technology to better understand and address complex planning issues and to effectively provide planning services.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Produce maps and update GIS datasets to support the Entitlement Services and the rezoning process.
  • Maintain and update official zoning layer, which covers Charlotte city limits and ETJ.
  • Provide GIS support during the adoption and implementation of the Unified Development Ordinance.
  • Maintain mapping and GIS files for the voluntary annexation process.
  • Maintain Land Development inspector and reviewer customer service area GIS files.
  • Create high quality information products and dashboards for Planning related projects as needed.
  • Complete technical research utilizing GIS and other analytical and visualization tools for a variety of Planning initiatives.
  • Embrace continuous learning, training and self-improvement.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Proficiency with ArcGIS suite of products, including ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS 10.7 and ArcGIS Online and familiarity with the geodatabase data model.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite of products, including Excel, Word and Outlook.
  • Knowledge of GIS concepts and ability to create and maintain maps, spatial datasets, tables and other geospatial data.
  • Ability to create visually pleasing maps using sound cartographic principals.
  • Ability to complete highly technical tasks efficiently and accurately, often under tight deadlines.
  • Ability to use problem solving and spatial analyses to answer Planning related questions.
  • Ability to provide excellent customer service and be able to work independently and in a team environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree
  • Familiarity with 3D spatial data, ArcUrban, CommunityViz and Tableau Desktop 2021.3 is preferred.
  • Some community engagement experience and public presentation skills are ideal.

Triangle Land Conservancy (TLC) is an accredited land trust serving a 6-county area in the Triangle region of North Carolina. TLC strives to create a healthier and more vibrant region by safeguarding clean water, protecting natural habitats, supporting local farms and food, and connecting people with nature through land protection and stewardship, catalyzing community action, and collaboration. TLC’s Land Protection Department seeks a graduate-level conservation planning intern for 2022. This position would contribute to a conservation planning project in Johnston County and surrounding areas. The geospatial analysis will identify priorities for landscape-level conservation, as well as parcel-level prioritization. This will be done through an assessment of natural resources represented in numerous geospatial data layers.

 

The position is responsible for:

  • researching the project area and generating a background narrative
  • finding and preparing GIS data
  • creating and running GIS models
  • producing outputs (maps, tables, reports) for the area
  • supporting TLC staff with two stakeholder outreach meetings
  • assisting TLC with other GIS needs/tasks as assigned

Requirements:

  • Applicants should be current or recent graduate students with experience in geospatial analysis either in practice or through extensive coursework.
  • Applicants should have a basic understanding of conservation planning, parcel prioritization, and North Carolina ecology.
  • Proficient in ArcGIS Pro.
  • Knowledge of natural resource data including working with both raster and vector data sets.
  • Knowledge of GIS model builder and experience with site suitability analysis or similar methodologies.
  • Ability to manage and organize large data sets.
  • Ability to produce visually appealing and clear results through maps, tables, chart

Ability to perform a variety of duties including research, drafting plans and reports, grant development and administration, budget development and administration, etc. Demonstration of project management and/or graphic design skills desired.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with a field of study in planning, public policy, urban design, public administration, geography or related field and at least three years of experience; Master’s degree preferred. Local government planning department experience is desired. Hiring Salary will be determined based on qualifications, education and experience.
