TJCOG is looking for an intern over the next couple of months to provide assistance with 160D compliance review and updates. This will be a paid internship and the candidate must be willing to provide at least 20 hours per week. There may be opportunity to provide assistance in other planning-related assignments as well as the potential of the internship being extended into a full-time Planner position, pending upcoming projects in the new fiscal year (beginning July 1). We are seeking a candidate that is able to start in the very near future and work will be conducted remotely.

The Transportation Planning Division is seeking a motivated and organized self-starter to fill the role of Transportation Planning Assistant.  The position startes in mid-to-late-May and going through the next academic school year. Please encourage the students to apply! Posting closes on 3/5.

This position is responsible for working with Town staff on transportation planning projects, multimodal count data analysis, transportation demand management (TDM), demographics studies, and GIS data management.

The position offers exposure to municipal transportation planning focused on bicycle, pedestrian, and transit, and oversight from transportation planning professionals.

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION:

This is a grant funded position that  offers two types of employment opportunities:

Summer employment only: This option offers a full time (40 hours per week) position beginning mid-May/early June 2021 and ending mid-August 2021.
Summer employment extending into the academic year: this option offers a full-time (40 hours) position beginning mid-May/early June 2021, and converts to part-time (10-15 hours per week) beginning mid-August 2021.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Assist with data collection activities and analysis in the office and/or field
  • Analyze and map data in an engaging and user-friendly manner
  • Assist with transportation demand management projects and outreach
  • Collect, enter, tabulate and analyze demographic and performance data

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

The ideal candidate should have one of the following qualifications:

  1. completed a BA/BS in Urban Planning, Transportation Planning, Public Policy, Geography or a related degree;
  2. be currently enrolled in a graduate planning program; or
  3. recently completed a graduate planning program.

Proficiency in MS Office, Adobe products (including Illustrator and InDesign), Google SketchUp, AutoCAD, and GIS is strongly preferred.  Please note your availability in the supplemental questions during the application process.  There is no preference given to one option over the other in the Town’s selection process.

Supplemental Information

The Program Support Group’s Landscape Design team is seeking a highly qualified undergraduate or graduate student with experience in any of the following academic departments: Landscape Architecture, Horticulture, Environmental Science

The intern will work closely with the Green Stormwater Infrastructure (GSI) Landscape Design staff within in the GSI Unit. The team’s primary responsibilities are design reviews, resource development, landscape contract management, data analysis, field research, and innovation to streamline the GSI Implementation Program. The Landscape Design team also works closely with the GSI Planning, GSI Design, Green Stormwater Operations (Maintenance), and Construction groups.

The candidate will assist landscape architects, engineers, and city planners in the unit with ongoing efforts to plan, develop, and promote green infrastructure; identify, design, and manage green infrastructure projects; and research and implement innovative green stormwater management techniques.

Experience with following programs is advantageous:

  • AutoCAD (version 2019)
  • Adobe Suite (Acrobat Pro, InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop)
  • ArcGIS (version 10.7.1)
  • Microsoft Office (Word and Excel)

Interns may be involved with any of the following:

  • Developing & drafting landscape plans
  • Landscape installation oversight & field inspections
  • Plant species identification
  • Field collection & data analysis

The Chatham 250 Historical Content Internship is a paid internship and opportunity to gain first-hand experience in a curatorial and community engagement.   • Archival experience helpful

The Pavel Molchanov Scholars Program is an endowed internship program at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s Institute for the Environment. The program is a partnership between the UNC Institute for the Environment and environmentally-focused small businesses, non-profit organizations and government institutions in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. Each year undergraduate students are matched with an environmental internship where they gain hands-on, professional training. Each Molchanov Scholar receives a $5,000 stipend to support their summer experience.

The UNC Institute for the Environment addresses environmental challenges by developing collaborations among diverse academic fields, public and private partners, and an informed and committed community. Undergraduate students in any environmentally-themed degree program who are interested in tackling complex environmental issues can apply for the Molchanov Scholarship.

Molchanov is a director and equity research analyst at Raymond James & Associates. He joined the firm in 2003 and has since been working as part of the Energy Group, researching oil and gas, renewables, and clean technology. He joined the UNC Institute for the Environment Board of Visitors as a member in 2019, and he also serves as a member of the advisory board at Cool Effect, an environmental project-funding charity.
