Employees in this class perform a wide variety of administrative support, secretarial, office management,
and clerical duties. Work generally requires that employees independently handle certain activities such as

The position will include the following knowledge and skills:

• Familiarity with National Environmental Policy Act and North Carolina Environmental Policy Act (NEPA-SEPA) procedures.
• Ability to prepare environmental documents and technical studies per NEPA/SEPA guidelines for state and federal agencies.
• Familiarity with travel demand modeling principles including socio-economic and land use forecasting.
• Experience with ArcGIS is a plus- preparing maps, conducting spatial and temporal data analysis including data collection, management and visual information systems.
• Familiarity with demographic data sources including census files, American Community Survey data, etc.
• Familiarity with community impact assessment principles including social and economic analysis.
• Assist with public involvement activities (meetings, mailings, media announcements, graphics, website management, etc.) and ensure compliance with agency public involvement requirements.
• Familiarity with natural systems surveys and impact assessment (i.e. 401/404 permitting, wetland delineations, natural resource surveys, etc.)
• Strong capability in the use of computer applications including MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
• Ability to follow direction and work in a team environment
• Ability to work on multiple projects concurrently
• Good verbal and written communication skills
• Ability to prepare technical reports
• Motivated to learn and think critically

ACLS is pleased to announce the tenth annual competition of the Mellon/ACLS Public Fellows program. The program promotes the visibility and value of the humanities PhD beyond the academy by offering opportunities for PhDs to contribute to the public good while gaining career-building experience in the fields of policy, community development, conservation, arts and culture, and media. This initiative is made possible through the support of The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.

In 2020, the program is offering 21 two-year term positions at organizations in government and nonprofit sectors for recent PhDs from the humanities and humanistic social sciences. Fellows will participate in the substantive work of these organizations and will have opportunities for networking, mentoring, and career development programming, both in-person and virtually. Fellows receive a stipend of $70,000 per year and have access to employer-based health insurance through the host organization. In addition, ACLS provides funds for relocation and professional development.

The Digital Research Support Specialist (DRSS) will contribute to the work of Digital Research Services, a department in the University Libraries that supports the Davis Library Research Hub. The Research Hub offers space, technology, research support, and training for patrons using GIS (Geographic Information Systems), numeric data, and data visualization. Digital Research Services has staff members with expertise in geographic information systems, data analysis, and data visualization, and offers a service desk staffed with student consultants to answer lower level research questions (tier one). The Digital Research Support Specialist will manage the tier one research support services. This includes directly assisting Library patrons with first tier research inquiries (with a focus on GIS), overseeing the Davis Library Research Hub service point, and supervising hourly student workers. This position will also coordinate technology, outreach efforts, and events.

The Digital Research Support Specialist will hire, train, and supervise the student consultants that provide first-tier research support. The person in this position will coordinate staffing of the service desk and will manage the schedule and student budget. They will also collaborate with the Library’s Desktop Support unit and DRS staff members to ensure adequate hardware and software for the computer lab.

This position will lead outreach and communication efforts for Digital Research Services by serving as the department’s primary communicator on social media and by coordinating efforts with the University Libraries Communications department. The DRSS will organize workshops, programs, tours, and events in the University Libraries’ Research Hub. They will maintain the public calendar of events, schedule Library spaces, coordinate with speakers, and ensure proper technology setup and furniture arrangement for programs and events.
