Hi! Thanks for considering this opportunity to work together. Full disclosure, I’ve never had an intern before, but I have a pretty good idea of what I’d want to work with you on – building and developing a climate newsletter to be rooted in science, justice, solidarity, joy, and action on the biggest challenge facing the world today.

Requirements for this position: At least a Junior or Senior undergrad in journalism, environmental studies, or related field of study, or one year equivalent experience writing and publishing your own newsletter.

Duties: Scheduling newsletter posts, coordinating with freelance writers, market research surrounding newsletters.

This position will be for a period of 12 weeks, starting on Monday, May 3, 2021. Time commitment will be approximately 10 hours per week, and pay will be $20 per hour. If everything goes well, there will be an opportunity to transition this position to a full time editorial assistant/operation manager starting this fall.

Upson County, Georgia announces the opening of its 2021 Planning internship position, which will be considered to be a staff member of the Building and Zoning Department (B&ZD). The position is open to college students currently enrolled in accredited graduate urban and regional planning and public administration programs. Enrolled undergraduate students, studying in those disciplines, who possess exceptional skills and/or experience, may be considered. This is a paid, full time (40 hrs/wk) position for twelve (12) to sixteen (16) weeks, depending upon the availability of the student intern. The 12-16 week employment period shall fall between May 3 and September 1, 2021. The position is open until filled.

The intern will be under the direct supervision of the Director of Building and Zoning, a career Planner, who served as an intern himself and supervised intern programs for six years. The successful internship candidate will become an employee of Upson County, Georgia. Partial funding for this position is from a Kundell Environmental Grant from the Association of County Commissioners of Georgia (ACCG) Civic Affairs Foundation, Inc. Due to that funding, certain reporting and availability requirements must be fulfilled and two deliverables must be provided by the end of the internship – a first draft, riverine corridors overlay district and wellhead protection ordinance and a first draft of group homes and reasonable accommodation zoning ordinance amendments. The intern will also assist with the day-to-day operations of the B&ZD and perform other duties as assigned. Covid-19 circumstances may alter the grant-related portion of this internship.

The B&ZD offices are located at 305 S. Hightower Street, Suite D-100, Thomaston, Georgia 30286 in the Thomaston-Upson County Government Complex, the former, repurposed, R.E. Lee Institute buildings. The intern position has its own dedicated work space, computer and phone. It is the intention of Upson County to provide the successful candidate with a rich educational experience, while benefitting Upson County with enhanced skills and staffing in those areas of responsibility of the B&ZD.

The Office of Transit Performance Management (PERF) uses data analytics and problem-solving to drive actions to improve performance. The intern would support several efforts to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of Metro’s operations, research other transit properties’ practices to identify good ideas that could be implemented at Metro and develop performance reporting and visualizations for staff to improve daily service for customers.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

SUMMARY:

A team of UNC researchers has developed a non-commercial, open-access website called Vaping Prevention Resource (VPR). This website is led by Dr. Kurt Ribisl, Professor and Chair of Health Behavior, Dr. Seth Noar, Professor of Journalism and Media, and Hannah Prentice-Dunn, Project Manager at the Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Communities across the country are grappling with the youth vaping epidemic – with 1 in 4 U.S. high schoolers reporting that they currently vape. VPR’s goal is to respond to the vaping epidemic by empowering communities with the resources and information they need to communicate with the public about the harmful effects of vaping.

Health Communication & Policy: The VPR website includes key resources to help practitioners communicate with youth about the harmful effects of vaping, as well as comprehensive policy resources for stakeholders who want to advocate for change in their communities. The website includes a Media Gallery that offers free, open access vaping prevention ads and materials for practitioners and community members to download and use. VPR also hosts a Policy Playbook for E-Cigarettes developed in Fall, 2020 in partnership with the Public Health Law Center.

We are seeking a graduate student to support VPR’s continued growth and outreach to public health practitioners in the 2021-2022 academic year

Major activities:

  • Support VPR’s collaboration with the Public Health Law Center to launch Version 2.0 of the Policy Playbook for ECigarettes in fall, 2021.
  • Assist the planning and launch of a VPR newsletter to reach public health practitioners across the country.
  • Work with leading vaping prevention experts at UNC and other institutions to collect and summarize best practices for public health practitioners.
  • Work with the VPR team to survey public health agency websites, identify vaping prevention and cessation ads, and enter these ads into the Media Gallery database.

Education and Qualifications:

  • A minimum of a bachelor’s degree in communication, public health, social sciences, or related area
  • Must possess excellent verbal, written, organizational, and interpersonal skills
  • Attentive to detail, organized, and able to seek advice when project concerns arise
  • Proficiency in MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint

This Research Assistant opportunity will support the activities of a groundbreaking collaboration between the Fort Bragg Department of Public Health, Cumberland County Department of Public Health, and the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center.  Fort Bragg, located in eastern North Carolina, is the largest military installation in the world, with 55,000 soldiers stationed at the base. An additional 150,000 family members and beneficiaries live on base and in an 8-county region surrounding Fort Bragg. For the past two years, UNC Lineberger Cancer Center has partnered with the Fort Bragg and Cumberland County Departments of Public Health to address the pressing health issues of tobacco use, healthy food access, HPV vaccinations, and COVID-19 response. We are seeking a Research Assistant for the 2021-2022 academic year to support this work.

The Research Assistant will work with Lieutenant Colonel Teresa Pearce, Director of the Fort Bragg Department of Public Health, Dr. Kurt Ribisl, Professor and Chair of Health Behavior, and Hannah Prentice-Dunn from the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center.

The Military Health Research Assistant will:

  • Support the research and practice activities of a 5-year, CDC National Tobacco Control Program grant to reduce the tobacco use rate on Fort Bragg from 26-17% by 2025.
  • Work with UNC and Fort Bragg leaders to implement HPV vaccinations as routine care across base.
  • Collect relevant information and resources to support Fort Bragg’s COVID-19 response and vaccination rollout.
  • Work with the UNC and Fort Bragg teams to connect with national Military health leaders across the country to disseminate this work.

This is an excellent opportunity to gain hands-on public health experience, and to learn about the most pressing health issues in the US military. The position will require 15 hours/week, will be funded at an hourly rate of $20/hour. The Research Assistant position is planned for August 2021 – May 2022, with an optional earlier start date.

Education: The position should have a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in public health, social sciences, or related area.

Biodiversity loss. Climate change. Sustainable development. Challenges for which the world needs solutions. Fast. International agreements like the Convention on Biological Diversity, the Paris Climate Agreement, and the Sustainable Development Goals represent the global community’s ambitions for rising to meet these challenges, but governments, companies, and international organizations need better information to guide their decisions. To meet this need, Conservation International and partners are:1) mapping the natural capital around the world that is most critical for providing the ecosystem services that support human well-being and 2) using computational models to explore scenarios of change, both in terms of alternative management strategies and external trends. By revealing hidden opportunities for conservation, restoration, and improved management, this project enables public and private sector actors to meet their diverse objectives in ways that better support both humanity and the planet. The successful applicant will support this effort by using their technical and subject matter expertise to advance the research and identify/support strategic engagement with key stakeholders, particularly by leveraging existing spatially explicit modeling frameworks to evaluate the outcomes of alternative conservation, restoration, and improved management scenarios in geographic contexts of relevance to key public and private sector partners.

This position is a 12-week paid summer internship (Hourly Rate: $15.00 USD)

RESPONSIBILITIES

The intern will work closely with CI’s Associate Scientist for Nature and Sustainability to identify and leverage opportunities to incorporate critical natural capital and ecosystem services into global investment and policy decision-making, particularly within the context of the UN Sustainable Development Goal framework.

Activities may include:

  • Configuring and using existing geospatial ecosystem service models to design and explore diverse scenarios of land/water management and/or trends in economic patterns, climate change, etc.
  • Providing support on GIS analysis, policy engagement, and scientific manuscript preparation (literature review, data collection/analysis, drafting recommendations).
  • Describing decision contexts of diverse types of international actors (investors, agenda-setters), identifying key leverage points, and making recommendations.
  • Conducting literature review, engaging with internal and external collaborators, and connecting with field programs to explore the concept of criticality as it pertains to ecosystem services and human well-being.
  • Other duties as assigned.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • The internship will be based in CI’s Arlington VA office. Remote work options are possible. No travel is expected. This is a 12-week summer internship.

The intern will possess strong technical skills in numerical modeling, GIS, statistics, programming, and/or remote sensing, as well as subject matter expertise in land use/land cover change, human geography, international development, and/or policy/governance/finance.
