The Research Triangle Foundation of North Carolina, the owner and developer of The Research Triangle Park, seeks an Assistant Planner/Planning Intern to support with short and long range planning activities; Transportation Demand Management (TDM); real estate transactions and recreational resources (trails and athletic facilities) for Research Triangle Park. The position also collects, analyzes, and reports on data of various types, including but not limited to: land use, geospatial, market, and company data. Candidates must have the ability to work independently or as part of a committed team and be dedicated to creating a quality product. The position is part time (20-30 hours a week; up to 1,000 hours a calendar year).

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Engage in short- and long-range planning initiatives for RTP;
  • Assist in planning and conducting initiatives related to transportation, infrastructure and recreation in RTP;
  • Support the activities of the RTP Board of Design and assist applicants in coordinating project submittal;
  • Support Transportation Demand Management activities;
  • Provide support for efforts relating to the implementation of the RTP plans, including the development of Park Center and implementation of First/Last Mile Study recommendations;
  • Assists in representing RTP on regional mobility working groups and committees;
  • Undertake GIS and land-use data collection and generate maps pertaining to RTP including pedestrian trails, infrastructure, building and site data etc.
  • In conjunction with the Business Development staff, prepare and update presentations, site sheets and other materials that provide key information used to promote RTP;
  • Conduct research and maintain datasets relating to companies, sites, and investments in the Park, including spatial data;
  • Provide staff support for the RTP Owners & Tenants Association;
  • Help develop other collateral, reports, correspondence, and written materials for project needs;
  • Maintain and manage archived documents for the Research Triangle Foundation;
  • Perform windshield surveys and site visits to gather data as needed.
  • Attend planning and/or transportation meetings on issues affecting RTP or the area around RTP. This may involve occasional evening meetings;
  • Perform other duties as assigned or required.

Qualifications
A bachelor’s degree and/or successful prior work experience in Planning, Public Administration or a similar field is desired. The individual should enjoy working collaboratively, but should also be comfortable working independently to prepare presentations, maps and compile and procure land planning documents (plans, surveys, studies, etc.).

  • Bachelor’s Degree is preferred; degree in Planning or related field is preferred
  • Knowledge of GIS and spatial analysis concepts required
  • Experience with ArcGIS preferred
  • Previous planning experience is preferred
  • Knowledge of basic land use and transportation planning concepts
  • Strong writing and verbal skills
  • Database and data management skills
  • Detail- and results-oriented
  • Strong proficiency in core Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, etc.)
  • Must be able to work independently and as part of a committed team

Physical Demands

  • Ability to communicate orally with customers, vendors, management and other co-workers; regular use of the telephone and e-mail for communication is essential
  • Sitting for extended periods is common; hearing, vision and speaking within normal ranges is essential for normal conversations, to receive ordinary information and to prepare or inspect documents
  • Standing and walking for reasonable periods of time, and over uneven terrain, may be necessary when gathering data in the field
  • Good manual dexterity for the use of common office equipment, such as computer terminals, calculator, copiers and fax machines

Work Environment
The job is performed indoors in a traditional office setting. Activities include extended periods of sitting, occasional fast paced events and extensive work at a computer monitor.

Urban3 (a data analytics firm) and Strong Towns (a national nonprofit) partner in many capacities including on data analysis, events and long-term projects. The ideal candidate is a skilled writer with research experience and a visual mind who can also think quantitatively.  

This job will be a 10-week, 40 hour/week position that is entirely remote. The selected candidate will work closely with Strong Towns and Urban3 staff on a variety of communications platforms, including Slack and all GSuite programs. The intern will be overseen by an analyst in the Urban3 office as well as Strong Towns Program Director, Rachel Quednau.

Duties: 

  • Write 1-3 articles for the Strong Towns website per week, covering issues related to Strong Towns’ and Urban3’s work.

  • Develop 1-2 long-term, in-depth article series for the Strong Towns website over the course of the internship.

  • Create multimedia work (such as podcasts, videos, data visualizations, etc.) for Strong Towns and Urban3.

  • Participate in regular Strong Towns and Urban3 staff meetings.

  • Facilitate collaboration between Strong Towns and Urban3 on projects and shared goals.

Program Overview

The internship will focus on development of a new multi-stakeholder initiative, the Global Alliance to End Environmental Crime (GAEC), expected to be formally launched during 2022. GAEC is envisioned as an alliance of governments, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), inter-governmental organizations, front-line civil society environmental defenders, and technical centers of excellence coming together to increase political attention and financing focused on combating illegal logging, forest clearing, fishing, mining and wildlife trafficking. WRI is leading the GAEC interim secretariat, in cooperation with the Meridian Institute and the Norwegian International Climate and Forest Initiative (NICFI). It builds on WRI’s Forest Legality Initiative, an ongoing program designed to combat the trade in illegally-logged timber and promote trade in legally-harvested forest products.

Internship Summary

The internship will support the director of the GAEC Interim Secretariat and Meridian Institute colleagues by carrying out legal and policy research and writing on specific natural resources crime issues (e.g., illegal deforestation, illegal mining, illegal fishing) as well as supporting outreach and engagement with key stakeholder groups and partner organizations.

JOB SUMMARY:

CSIS seeks a full-time Communications and Social Media Intern to provide administrative, strategic communications, and social media support to the Global Food Security Program. The intern will be an integral part of a small team and will often be required to complete tasks in short timeframes. This position prioritizes the program’s social media and promotional activities, with research and writing occasionally involved. Demonstrated interest in food security or related field required.

The intern will work closely with the Program Manager in managing communications around program publications and the program’s social media platforms. Of particular importance will be the intern’s role in enhancing the Program’s use and presence on relevant social media platforms. Tasks may also include prepping background information on food security experts and organizations ahead of meetings, media engagements, and events.

The Communications and Social Media Intern will also provide administrative support to the program, including supporting private and public events and assisting the coordination of scheduling and calendars. As CSIS focuses on providing interns with an educational experience that will serve them in their future career, interns will also be encouraged to pitch additional projects they would like to focus on.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Aid in the editing and publicizing of the GFSP podcast.

As the U.S. Energy intern, you will provide research needed to support the Energy Team’s various projects across the U.S., with two of particular focus.  The majority of your work will focus on research support for 1) local county and city school districts planning electrically and financially for electrification of school bus fleets with the Bezos Electric School Bus Initiative and 2) helping with research and delivery of webinar series on curbside charging planning and development for city energy/fleet managers for downtown districts and residential neighborhoods per UPS Foundation outreach goals.
