Duties and Tasks
– Responsible for all aspects of GIS to include mapping, verification of data accuracy, and maintenance of database information.
– Researches and analyzes information necessary to prepare specific documents, reports, plans and maps as related to planning department.
– Assists with preparation, implementation and amendment of the Unified Development Ordinance, Comprehensive Master Plan, and Transportation Plan.
– Confers with and advises architects, builders, attorneys, contractors, engineers, and the general public regarding town development policies and standards.

Description

The Davis Library Research Hub is looking for a talented and enthusiastic Graduate Research Assistant to work as a GIS consultant. We offer equipment, software, and expertise for geographic information systems (GIS), numeric data services, text and data mining, data visualization, and digital humanities. The Research Assistant’s primary role is to support geographic information services, so we intend to hire a student with strong GIS skills and an interest in learning more about our other areas of expertise. Some training will be provided to the successful applicant- much of which will be self-directed.

Primary duties
– Support Digital Research Services staff in providing advanced-level consultations to Library patrons. Patron requests generally pertain to finding and using spatial and numeric data for GIS work, web mapping, and visualization.
– Provide intermediate-level consultations to Library patrons needing GIS assistance.
– Assist with project work and classes/workshops.

Project work, including:
– With guidance from staff as needed, work on all stages of research projects. Projects generally involve advanced-level GIS work. Work includes identifying methods and trouble-shooting.
– Develop and update instructional materials and assist with or co-instruct classes and workshops.
– Creating and editing maps and visualizations.
– Write project summaries for the Research Hub Project Gallery

Classes and workshops:
– Update instructional materials.
– Assist instructors by assisting individuals during classes/workshops.
– Depending on skills & interest, there may be opportunities to lead instruction sessions.

The position is for 20 hours per week at a salary of $1336/month ($16,037/year). The expected position start date is August 20, 2019, and the end date is July 31, 2020.

Preferred qualifications

Required:
– Proficiency with GIS software (ArcPro, ArcMap, QGIS, R, etc.)
– Strong commitment to public service
– Excellent communication skills
– Excellent organizational and time management skills
– Flexible, adaptable, and comfortable with experimentation and self-directed learning
– Ability and willingness to learn new skills related to digital research
– Must be reliable and punctual

Preferred:
– Experience working with at least one software package or scripting language used for digital research in addition to GIS, such as text or data mining, data visualization, or digital humanities.

Examples include: Online mapping applications (ArcGIS Online, Map Box, Leaflet, etc.), Google Earth, Tableau, Programming (Python, JavaScript, R), Adobe Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign), Microsoft Excel

– Previous work experience or substantial coursework in a relevant area

Our consultants provide support for data services, geographic information services, data visualization, and digital humanities. We anticipate hiring students with a range of interests and abilities and will provide training to those hired. The positions are for 8-15 hours per week at a salary of $12.50/hour.

Primary duties:
– Staff the Davis Library Research Hub Service Desk by answering walk-in questions.
– Maintain our public spaces (tidy space, organize furniture, etc.).
– Assist with project work and classes/workshops:

Project work, including:
– Creating presentations on the Liquid Galaxy digital Earth display (training provided).
– Creating and edit maps and visualizations.
– Scraping, clean or subset data using scripting/coding.
– Performing specific tasks to accomplish research projects as outlined by full time staff or research assistant. Tasks generally involve processing or creating textual, numeric, or spatial data.

We are pleased to announce the launch of the Fall 2019 term of the U.S. Department of Energy’s Clean Cities University Workforce Development Program (CCUWDP). This fall, CCUWDP is offering 39 workforce development program positions across the nation and applications are now available. This is a wonderful opportunity for students looking to gain experience in the energy and transportation areas.

The Clean Cities University Workforce Development Program is an initiative of Clean Cities, a government-industry partnership sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Vehicle Technologies Program. Clean Cities strives to reduce petroleum consumption in the transportation sector in nearly 100 communities across the country. Since the creation of the CCUWDP in 2010, Clean Cities has hosted more than 350 interns in more than 60 Coalitions.

The Clean Cities internship will give students studying communications, public relations, business, marketing, engineering or environmental sciences, the opportunity to grow public awareness and expand the markets of advanced vehicle technologies, alternative fuels, and practices that reduce the consumption of petroleum. Students have participated in research, outreach activities, public education, K-12 outreach, fleet events, and a vast array of transportation-related environmental projects.

Specific Details:
– Positions are 15 or 20 hours/week (determined by the coalition) for 14 weeks
– Fall 2019 Internship Approximate Dates: September 9, 2019- December 20, 2019
– Stipends range from $2,520 – $4,200 depending on academic level and number of hours assigned by the coalition.
– Must be a current undergraduate (Junior or Senior only), graduate student, or up to one year past graduation.

Eastern Carolina Council of Governments (ECC) is seeking three AmeriCorps VISTA members to address unmet needs in communities we serve, including 9 counties and 62 incorporated municipalities. For over fifty years, ECC has been a unifying entity within Eastern NC to enhance the region’s quality of life. We provide human, planning, and economic development services to local governments and area residents by leveraging resources and collaborating regionally. Assisting our member governments with community and transportation planning, disaster recovery, economic development, human services, and grants is how we put our mission into practice.

ECC’s office is in the heart of downtown New Bern, NC. Settled in 1710, New Bern is North Carolina’s second-oldest colonial town and is filled with historic southern charm. Centrally located along North Carolina’s coast at the union of the Trent and Neuse Rivers, this scenic riverfront city offers a lively downtown, entertainment, arts, shopping, and dining. Situated less than an hour from the state’s Crystal Coast beaches and the Croatan National Forest, New Bern and the surrounding area also provides plenty of recreation opportunities.

ECC is seeking three VISTA members to build the capacity of each focus area within the planning department: economic development, transportation planning, and community development/disaster recovery. Our Economic Development VISTA will help to find, secure, and prepare reports for grants that enhance economic stability in the region and assist with the implementation of ECC’s Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy (CEDS). The Transportation Planning VISTA will conduct data and GIS analyses to support primarily non-highway transportation projects that provide better access and connectivity to goods and services and increase the likelihood of projects being funded. Lastly, our Disaster Recovery VISTA will aid in the implementation of our EDA-Disaster Recovery Planning Grant by working directly with Hurricane Florence-impacted communities to find creative solutions and mitigate future impacts. As part of our team, you will work collaboratively two other VISTA members and four full-time planning staff to promote vibrant and resilient communities across Eastern NC.
