The Planning Director reports to the Assistant Town Manager and is part of the Management Team. This position requires an energetic, proactive collaborator and coordinator of people and tasks with excellent interpersonal and operation skills. Key responsibilities will be to provide oversight for functions such as land use planning, subdivision regulation, zoning enforcement, subdivision and development review and oversight, annexation process, and various public input processes. Other areas of responsibility include both short- and long-range planning and on-going and special projects to ensure appropriate guidance and regulation of the growth and development of the Town, conducting studies, performing planning duties, providing managerial and administrative guidance to the department and supervising the staff of professional planners and zoning compliance officials. The Director position requires extensive public contact and involvement in public input and outreach efforts, and requires coordination with other departments, boards, and commissions. The role also includes developing an effective relationship between the Town and the business/commercial community, and between Town and citizens. The Town of Knightdale, North Carolina is seeking a dedicated professional to serve in the position of code enforcement officer/planner. Conveniently located just 9 miles from downtown Raleigh at the juncture of interstates 540 and 495, Knightdale is a well-established and rapidly growing progressive community with the youngest median age in North Carolina’s capital county. Knightdale has a population just at 17,000, an annual operating budget of $17.2 million and 89 full-time employees across eight departments. The successful candidate will work under the supervision of the development services director to enforce the town’s code of ordinances, unified development ordinance and nc building code relating to land use, zoning, minimum housing and nuisances. This position also assists with municipal planning, zoning, and development functions as necessary. Education: four year degree in business, city/urban planning, geography, construction management, criminal justice or related field. The successful candidate will have a minimum of two years of experience in law enforcement, code enforcement, building inspections, urban planning, geography, or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Certification as a North Carolina zoning official (CZO) preferred. Eastern Carolina Council of Governments seeks a Regional Planning Director. This position supervises a staff of professional planners and technical personnel local government planning services. Responsibilities include working with the member governments, local, state and federal agencies, businesses, NGO’s, non-profit and academic organizations to identify issues and challenges in the region; directing professional staff with a variety of backgrounds and types of projects; providing oversight to project application and program/grant management tasks; providing advice to the Executive Director and Board on ways and means of implementing regional planning and development strategy; developing and recommending adoption of new initiatives, funds, priorities and plans to the Board; and supervising and participating in provision of local technical assistance and development including meeting facilitation, regional and state-wide planning efforts and related activities. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Executive Director, and is evaluated through conferences, reports, success in receiving funding and in meeting project goals, progress on projects, and feedback from the clients and staff.

Master’s degree in Regional and/or Urban Planning, Public Administration or related field and considerable progressively responsible local governmental or regional planning experience including supervisory experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
