This position requires advanced professional planning experience as it often leads or is significantly involved with larger, more complex planning assignments and projects. The Senior Planner – Current Planning should possess greater independence and judgment while receiving general supervision from the Planning Director. This position supervises current planning division staff and offers the potential for future advancement.

Under limited supervision, performs supervisory, technical administrative and professional work in directing and coordinating the activities of the Planning Department to ensure the protection of the natural environment, the orderly growth and efficient administration of County resources. The Director of Planning is responsible for enforcement of land use ordinances such as those pertaining to subdivisions, mobile homes, flood damage prevention and others; and providing administrative supervision for code enforcement activities of the Department. The position is responsible for the formulation, implementation, modification and improvement of master and subsidiary plans for the County’s physical and community development, including the formulation of a comprehensive land use plan. Position is also responsible for serving as a technical advisor to the Board of County Commissioners and County Manager on matters relating to planning and development. Supervises a staff of professional, technical and support personnel. The Planning Director reports to the County Manager.

The Mid-East Commission Planning, Economic Development, and Community Services Department, located in Washington, North Carolina serving a five county region, is seeking a qualified individual with education and experience in the areas of, Land Use Planning, Zoning Administration, Transportation Planning and Water Quality Planning, to fill the position of Planner. The Planner position, under the supervision of the Department Director, performs professional planning work for the COG. Work primarily includes conducting planning, zoning, land use, open space, water quality and assistance to the COG members, as well as coordination of Rural Transportation Planning Organizations (RPO). Work requires thorough knowledge of the planning field and is characterized by independent judgment and initiative in the performance of duties. Work is performed primarily in an inside environment. The employee may serve as a lead worker or project manager. Work is performed under the regular supervision of the Director of Planning, Economic Development and Community Services and is evaluated through conferences, observation, reports, progress on projects, and feedback from the clients.

An employee in this class performs research and background work for the implementation of the City’s adopted long-range plans, provides demographic and socio-economic data to the public,
facilitates the realization of planning projects and goals, revises plans as-needed to maintain their relevance, and assists the Director with drafting design and zoning standards that will implement
planning goals and objectives. Work includes public meeting facilitation and involves giving information, answering inquiries, and serving as primary staff for the City’s Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Commission. The employee will also be expected to work on small area plans that realize the City’s land use, transportation, and comprehensive planning goals, as specified in its adopted plans. Work requires the performance of technical support duties such as
doing research work for any planning project for the City. Work on nights and weekends will periodically be required. Work is supervised by the Development Director and is evaluated
through conferences, review of assigned projects, and overall completion of assigned tasks.

ACLS is pleased to announce the tenth annual competition of the Mellon/ACLS Public Fellows program. The program promotes the visibility and value of the humanities PhD beyond the academy by offering opportunities for PhDs to contribute to the public good while gaining career-building experience in the fields of policy, community development, conservation, arts and culture, and media. This initiative is made possible through the support of The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.

In 2020, the program is offering 21 two-year term positions at organizations in government and nonprofit sectors for recent PhDs from the humanities and humanistic social sciences. Fellows will participate in the substantive work of these organizations and will have opportunities for networking, mentoring, and career development programming, both in-person and virtually. Fellows receive a stipend of $70,000 per year and have access to employer-based health insurance through the host organization. In addition, ACLS provides funds for relocation and professional development.

This class is the second level in a five-level Planning Series devoted to paraprofessional and professional support of municipal planning for a variety of operations and functions including strategic planning, comprehensive planning, land use, community development, parks, and operational planning. Incumbents provide professional journey-level planning work in the area of assignment.

Provide intermediate technical and professional support of CMAP’s long-range comprehensive regional planning, the Local Technical Assistance (LTA) program, and research, data analysis, and mapping work to contribute to the agency’s long-range and local planning efforts. Planning projects may include intermediate level comprehensive plans, corridor or subarea plans, zoning revisions, studies of special topics such as housing or economic development, and similar planning activities. Research and analysis projects may include intermediate level GIS mapping, data processing, quantitative spatial analyses, and the development and documentation of new business intelligence tools and products, and methodologies for quantitative analysis.

The Planner I position is an entry level planning position involving the provisions of technical assistance to the planning division for current planning activities. This positions handles day-to-day functions of building permit review, entry level case management, preparation of graphic illustrations, maps and photographic materials, conducting research as needed, and Planner-of-the-Day duties to support the implementation and maintenance of the Comprehensive Plan and Land Development code. Provides staff support to the Director of Community Development, Planning Manager, Board of Adjustment, Planning Commission, and City Council.

The UNC Charlotte Urban Institute (Institute) is hiring an Associate Director of Research who will also serve as the Director of Community Research Services (Director). The Director will serve as the day-to-day manager of the Institute research team and will manage ongoing tasks that enable the Institute to provide research with/for the Charlotte, North Carolina region, including evaluation services, neighborhood and regional indicator work, and other engaged and applied research efforts. The Director will also lead and advise research projects related to their own substantive, methodological, and analytic expertise.

We work to meet our community’s research and technical support needs and we seek solutions to the social, economic, and environmental challenges faced by the communities that surround us. Performs intermediate skilled technical work receiving, processing and issuing land use, building and other construction permits, serving as floodplain administrator, enforcing ordinances, conducting special studies, researching complex planning problems, preparing and maintaining associated records and files, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the moderate supervision of the Planning and Community Development Director.
