Description

This position acts as the City’s chief transportation planner, providing strategic and dynamic leadership for the City’s systems-level transportation planning efforts, including consideration of how transportation decisions relate to land use and economic development in the city and region.

You will provide leadership for several projects that support the Mayor’s vision for a multi-modal city that provides safe and efficient transportation for all Houstonians. You will direct efforts to support all modes of transportation, including transit, bicycling, and walking. You will be a member of the Department’s senior leadership team and work closely with City staff and partner agencies. You will communicate complex transportation planning programs, studies, and projects to a wide audience. You will coordinate daily with transportation partner such as Houston Public Works, METRO and TxDOT. You will regularly use your project management and leadership skills.

You should be creative and bring a new perspective to age-old problems. You are naturally curious and have a strong desire to learn and grow in your profession. You must be able to demonstrate strong analytical and communication skills; experience working with the public/clients/team to resolve problems; and the ability to juggle multiple priorities.

Description

This position will manage policy and ordinance development for the Department, including stakeholder engagement and implementation. In addition, this position is the Department’s point of contact for all legislative and other matters relating to the Mayor’s office of Government Relations. This position also manages the City of Houston’s Historic Preservation Program, providing direct supervision to the Historic Preservation Officer and a team of approximately 5 preservation planners.

The next might be spent preparing a staff report for the upcoming Houston Archeological and Historical Commission (HAHC).

This Planner II position provides support to the team through technical reviews, research and analysis of planning data for activities relating to the Historic Preservation Ordinance. Planning activities include but are not limited to certificates of appropriateness, landmark designations, historic districts, design guidelines, historic tax exemptions, technical assistance and consultation, and community educational outreach.
