Performs intermediate professional planning, research, analytical, and technical duties in the County Planning Department to ensure the orderly growth of the County and efficient administration of County resources; reviews, approves, and/or certifies development and permit applications plans, plats, projects, programs, to ensure
compliance with County land use regulations; complies, maintains, and analyzes data and information pertaining to population growth, land use, economic development, and related areas; prepares technical reports, plans, and proposals based on information gathered; reviews, approves, and/or certifies plans, plats, projects, and programs to ensure compliance with local and state regulations, ordinances, and policies; performs related work as required. The Department of Community and Regional Planning (CRP) in the College of Design at Iowa State University is seeking to fill a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor starting August 16, 2020. The successful candidate will contribute to the mission of the department and the College of Design through teaching core planning courses and electives at the graduate and undergraduate levels. We are seeking an individual who will contribute to research and teaching in a broadly defined area of environmental planning and sustainable/resilient communities. Areas of research and teaching interest include (but are not limited to) environmental sustainability, food systems, renewable energy, natural resource management, environmental policy, climate change, infrastructure and transportation. The planning department is a key component of a university-wide graduate program in sustainable agriculture and transportation planning. The successful candidate will be expected to strengthen connections between CRP, sustainable agriculture and/or transportation programs. Teaching, demonstrated or interest in, is of particular importance to the search committee, as the successful candidate will be responsible for developing successful courses with large enrollments.

The Town of Surf City serves an approximate population of 3,500. The town is a rapidly growing hub community situated between Wilmington N.C. and Jacksonville N.C. The town is a resort community which experiences the population drastically increased during the summer months. The Planner oversees the operations and activities of the Planning division within the Community Development Department, supervises staff, and implements plans, policies, and developmental measures in order to assure orderly growth and development of current and long-range plans for the Town.

This position works directly with other professional planning staff to perform work in administering the Town’s Unified Development Ordinance (UDO). This highly skilled position requires the ability to apply the UDO to specific situations and provide accurate and well-organized analysis to customers, applicants and various Town boards including the Planning Board, Board of Zoning Adjustment, Historic District Commission, Appearance Commission and Town Council. The ideal applicant’s skill set will also include the ability to work independently to conduct research on a variety of topics, meet multiple overlapping deadlines and communicate effectively and clearly with parties representing diverse interests and motivations. Clear and professional written and verbal communication, including comfort with public speaking, is very important. A bachelor’s degree or master’s degree in planning or a related field, or a bachelor’s degree or master’s degree in an unrelated field plus two or more years of professional experience in a related field is typically required, but an equivalent combination of relevant education and work experience may be considered.

This position acts as the City’s chief transportation planner, providing strategic and dynamic leadership for the City’s systems-level transportation planning efforts, including consideration of how transportation decisions relate to land use and economic development in the city and region.

You will provide leadership for several projects that support the Mayor’s vision for a multi-modal city that provides safe and efficient transportation for all Houstonians. You will direct efforts to support all modes of transportation, including transit, bicycling, and walking. You will be a member of the Department’s senior leadership team and work closely with City staff and partner agencies. You will communicate complex transportation planning programs, studies, and projects to a wide audience. You will coordinate daily with transportation partner such as Houston Public Works, METRO and TxDOT. You will regularly use your project management and leadership skills.
