THE ROLE

We are seeking full-time Summer Fellows for 10-12 weeks in our Atlanta, Dallas, Los Angeles, New York, Raleigh, and Washington, DC offices. Summer Fellows will be expected to work from an HR&A office at least two days per week.

Summer Fellows will have the opportunity to engage in project work and practice development as well as employ skills aligned with the core analytical staff at HR&A. Our analyst cohort forms the foundation of our team-oriented structure and helps to drive our data-driven approach to city building.

Summer Fellows may help prepare written reports, presentations, and Excel models for clients, as well as firm marketing materials and proposals for new projects. Day-to-day tasks will range from project to project and may include:

  • Econometric Modeling
  • Spatial Analysis
  • Real Estate Pro Formas
  • Public Policy Analysis

EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

Candidates should currently be completing their senior year of a bachelor’s degree program or are working towards a graduate level degree. Preference will be given to candidates with a concentration in urban planning, real estate finance, economic development, public policy, housing finance, or a related field.

TIMELINE

Applications will be accepted until 11:00 PM ET on January 29, 2024. Accepted Fellows will be notified in early March and will begin the Summer Fellowship Program on June 3, 2024. The Summer Fellowship to Full-Time Employment Track is anticipated to run until August 23, 2024. Start and end dates are flexible based on candidate availability.

Individuals in the Summer Fellow to Full-Time Employment Track, who have completed their degree programs, may be considered for transition into a full-time role at HR&A upon successful completion of the fellowship.

COMPENSATION

Summer Fellows will be paid a monthly stipend of $6,000.

Climate Corps fellows work with companies, public institutions, and non-profit organizations to meet climate commitments by identifying opportunities to reduce emissions in their operations and supply chains.

Required Qualifications

The Leadership Fellow Program is a two-year rotational program at The Port Authority of New York & New Jersey open to students who are receiving a graduate degree between December 2023 and June 2024. Over the span of two years, Leadership Fellows have the opportunity to rotate through four different departments of their choice. Departments where Fellows frequently rotate include Aviation, Planning & Regional Development, Port, Sustainability, Tunnels Bridges & Terminals, Engineering, Finance, the PATH transit system, Agency airports (LaGuardia, JFK, and Newark), the Port Authority Bus Terminal, and more. While there’s no typical day for a Leadership Fellow, some examples of responsibilities include project management, community outreach, process improvement, research, assisting with facility operations, and leading other important initiatives that impact the New York and New Jersey region. The program is designed to build a strong foundation of business acumen, adaptability, and knowledge of The Port Authority as a whole. The breadth and depth of experiences within the program are critical in preparing Leadership Fellows to be future leaders within the Agency.

Leadership Fellows are full-time, permanent employees with a yearly salary and benefits. After successful completion of the program, Leadership Fellows are considered for key positions throughout the Port Authority. As of 2023, there are approximately 100 program alumni still working at the Agency.

TJCOG is a regional entity whose mission is, “to serve as an intergovernmental organization for local elected officials that works proactively on regional issues in order to sustain and improve the quality of life for our citizens.” In our diverse seven-county region, we convene local governments, stakeholders and partners to tackle the many challenges that cross jurisdictional lines. As part of TJCOG’s Community and Economic Development efforts, Triangle J COG administers home repair funding awarded from the North Carolina Housing Finance Agency. These funds, in addition to other local and private funds, are used to improve the health and safety of homes for low-income households across the Triangle J region. TJCOG partners with Rebuilding Together of the Triangle, member governments, and other local community organizations to support home repair consortiums, with a goal of improving collaboration, increasing efficiency, and streamlining the process for homeowners and community partners alike.

This 2023-2024 AmeriCorps position will have a start date (for new full-time 11 month members)of September 5th, 2023 (or soon thereafter), and an end date of July 31st 2024 (or 11 months after start date).

Members are also eligible to signup for SNAP benefits. Participants who complete the program will receive a Segal Education Award of $6,895 (taxable in the year used, not the year awarded) from the National Service Trust.

DFI partners with local governments in North Carolina to attract private investment for transformative projects by providing specialized real estate development and finance expertise. DFI offers graduate students paid summer internships in real estate and community development to support our work across North Carolina communities. DFI partners with local governments on projects including master-planned developments, urban infill redevelopment, downtown revitalization, neighborhood redevelopment, and affordable housing development. Examples of projects include:

•Evaluation of the adaptive reuse potential of a historic Main St hotel in a small western NC town

•Master development of a new urbanist town center in a small town next to a major metro area

•Pre-development for mixed-income housing in a tourism-based urban community

•Development of a revitalization strategy for a distressed neighborhood in a rural community

Under the guidance and supervision of staff, graduate student interns will assist with real-estate pre-development tasks, including, touring local projects and collecting field work data; meeting project stakeholders; conducting market research; designing and implementing processes to solicit and incorporate community feedback on development plans; developing models to test financial feasibility; researching industry best practices; writing blog posts; and preparing presentations.

Qualifications: Graduate students in planning, business, public administration and/or related disciplines such as public health,social work, geography, landscape architecture, or architecture are encouraged to apply. Applicants should demonstrate a strong interest in acquiring practical experience in real estate development and finance, community development, affordable housing, neighborhood revitalization, and downtown revitalization. To succeed in any of these role, you’ll have:

-An interest and passion in cities, especially those in the American South

-Practical design or development skills not required, but greatly preferred. Design skills may include architectural software or design software, such as SketchUp, AutoCAD, Photoshop, or similar.

Southern Urbanism is a mission-based 501c3 organization committed to people who build Southern cities. Our mission is to bring practical expertise back to the discourse, to inform community leaders and policymakers, and amplify the unique perspectives of front-line new industry professionals in urban development. The nonprofit works with practitioners to enable the creation of better cities throughout the South.
