Performs intermediate to difficult work inspecting residential and commercial buildings for compliance with Town ordinances and state building codes; does related work as required. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Assistant Building Codes Administrator.

This position works directly with other professional planning staff to perform work in administering the Town’s Unified Development Ordinance (UDO). This highly skilled position requires the ability to apply the UDO to specific situations and provide accurate and well-organized analysis to customers, applicants and various Town boards including the Planning Board, Board of Zoning Adjustment, Historic District Commission, Appearance Commission and Town Council. The ideal applicant’s skill set will also include the ability to work independently to conduct research on a variety of topics, meet multiple overlapping deadlines and communicate effectively and clearly with parties representing diverse interests and motivations. Clear and professional written and verbal communication, including comfort with public speaking, is very important. A bachelor’s degree or master’s degree in planning or a related field, or a bachelor’s degree or master’s degree in an unrelated field plus two or more years of professional experience in a related field is typically required, but an equivalent combination of relevant education and work experience may be considered.

The Director of Housing Justice will lead efforts to continue to retain long-term neighbors in this historically African-American neighborhood, to attract new neighbors invested in the Northside
community, and to balance a market currently tipped towards student rentals. The Director will also co-lead our community land bank and housing development strategy and spearhead creative partnership initiatives. The Director of Housing Justice will be part of the NNI project team, working closely with colleagues from Self-Help and the MCJC to facilitate a multi-pronged effort to bend the market toward justice in Northside. This Director will work alongside of and in support of our
neighborhood leadership group, the Northside Compass Group.

This position conducts regulatory review of development proposals and subdivision plat applications; researches development activity, considers policy trends, and prepares recommendations; interacts directly with the public, developers, engineers, architects and other professionals; and makes presentations to the Planning Commission, city officials, other boards and agencies.

Performs intermediate skilled technical work in the inspection of all phases of building plans and construction in the County’s Planning and Development Department. An employee in this class inspects construction work in process to enforce State codes for building for building construction including the five trades of building, plumbing, electrical, and mechanical codes as well as fire. Work involves performing skilled inspections to determine the quality of workmanship, materials, and safety precautions; requires exercising judgment in interpreting state codes. Technical judgment is required to interpret provisions of the codes as applied to practical construction projects and circumstances. Inspections may require some physical effort and are performed under hazards present in dealing with construction work in progress. The employee is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions and extremely hot and cold temperatures. Work is also subject to noise and dusts. Tact, courtesy, and firmness must be exercised in dealing with contractors and the general public. Triangle J Council of Governments (TJCOG) seeks a Program Specialist to assist with projects that focus on commuter behavior, transportation, and air quality improvements.
