Projects for our local government clients include full code updates, form-based codes, housing, growth management, impact and development fees, subdivision codes, military, and land use compatibility.

We are looking for a part-time intern to assist in all areas of our work, focusing on code drafting and policy development. The ideal candidate will have relevant experience in a jurisdiction or private firm, but prior experience is not necessary.

Minimum Qualifications A willingness to take on new challenges in planning is a must. It’s important to be self-motivated, self-directed, and to work with a high degree of detail and excellence. The ability to work independently without oversight is a must. An ability to work with government officials, staffs, private developers and landowners, and private sector partners is also important.

Small City Innovators, a storytelling podcast about the people and ideas vitalizing America’s small cities, is seeking a paid intern to help develop, market and attract funding for the show.

The ideal candidate has excellent writing, research and communication skills. They have an interest in entrepreneurship, economic development, public policy, media and/or journalism, and are earning an undergraduate or graduate degree in one of these areas.

The position entails researching and developing a framework for SCI cities, helping to write a funding proposal for the show’s next series, identifying funding organizations, contacting SCI cities to request story submissions, and helping market each episode.

During June – August this opportunity will include 6-10 hours of work per week and 3-5 hours per week thereafter. Pay is $14 an hour.

We are seeking an intern to support our recycling, organics, and waste reduction programs throughout North America. The type of work will vary but will frequently involve waste characterization studies and zero waste outreach. The ideal candidate will have an interest in recycling, organics, and waste reduction programs, as well as interest in quantitative analysis and problem-solving. Attention to detail and a commitment to team building are equally important qualities.

Specific duties of this role include:

  • Collaboratively collecting and sorting (either visually or by hand-sort) desired waste, recyclable, and/or organic material as specified in a research study design.
  • Writing emails, reports, memos, and other project-related documents.
  • Performing data entry and collection both in the field and in the office using Cascadia’s cloud-based software and Excel.

  • Conducting research (internet and telephone surveys) as needed.

The Asia Foundation’s Environment unit team seeks a Junior Associate to work remotely for our San Francisco, CA office during the summer 2021 program period from June 28 – September 17, 2021.

The Junior Associate (JA) working with the Environment team will gain a deeper understanding of the most pressing environmental challenges facing in the region and contribute to TAF efforts to help address them at the national and regional levels. Specifically, the JA will work with the Environment team to strengthen the ability to communicate TAF’s unique approaches and expertise in addressing a broad range of environmental issues, through expanded program website content, online publications, development of outreach materials, and curation of TAF’s environmental project database used for developing capacity statements and other outreach materials. The JA will also support the team to identify emerging environmental trends and donor interest to propose new project ideas and interventions. Position Summary:
Audubon will work with one legal or policy intern, who will support our policy team’s coastal policy and natural infrastructure work. We are looking for an individual interested in environmental conservation law and policy, climate resilience, coastal management, and/or marine conservation law and policy. The intern will provide legal and/or policy research and analysis to advance our policy program’s goals, which include informing legislative and administrative actions related to natural infrastructure, coastal management, disaster recovery, fisheries management, endangered species, environmental review, among other topics.

This intern will contribute to the goals of the coastal program in a variety of ways, with many opportunities to dive deeper into projects based on interest and needs. Essential Functions:

  • Gather and analyze information about priority policy issues.
  • Conduct legal and policy research and analysis of bills moving through Congress and regulatory actions that are being taken by federal agencies.
  • Contribute to Audubon publications on legal and policy aspects of using natural infrastructure solutions for enhancing climate resilience at the federal and state levels.
  • Write letters to support, improve, or oppose policies moving through Congress or the Administration.
  • Monitor congressional hearings, and work with Audubon policy staff to engage congressional offices on policy priorities.
  • Participate in Audubon coalition activities with other environmental groups.
  • Gain exposure to Audubon’s grassroots outreach programs and methodology.
  • Help to plan engagement events for Members of Congress.
  • Conduct legal research and analysis to inform potential litigation in support of Audubon’s policy work.

Duties and Responsibilities

The Comprehensive Planning Intern will work on special projects to support the public engagement and research work of the division, which may include:

Advancing the development of missing middle housing supportive policy, supporting implementation of the city’s BRT system, supporting the work of ongoing area plans (Dix Edge Area Study, Southeast Area Study, Wakefield Area Study), supporting the department’s racial equity update of the 2030 Comprehensive Plan.

Completing a biennial update of citywide land capacity analysis and associated population projections; including analyzing and comparing density of approved residential units, zoning entitlement, and FLUM recommendations. The output of the study would compare the FLUM recommended density as it relates to potential residential units and approved residential units.

Using data from EPA, NC DEQ, and City of Raleigh to create a complete inventory, including GIS data, of brownfields and environmental justice analysis; conducting associated research on incentive programs for remediation/redevelopment.

The intern experience includes a staff mentor and broad exposure to a wide range of public planning-related processes, including governing body, board/commission, and internal departmental meetings.

HIRING RANGE: $15.00 per hour
