General Overview:
The Shared‐Use Mobility Center (SUMC) is a non‐profit public interest organization promoting multi‐modal transportation systems that work for all. Through pilot projects, research, capacity‐building, and advocacy, SUMC helps communities realize a vision of an equitable and sustainable mobility future.

SUMC is looking for a Partnerships & Engagement Intern. SUMC is expanding to serve a growing ecosystem of public agencies, mobility companies, community organizations, and tribes interested in collaborating towards mobility equity and climate goals. The Partnerships & Engagement team is responsible for SUMC’s communications, partnerships, and convening activities, including the annual National Shared Mobility Summit, as well as execution of the Shared Mobility 2030 Action Agenda, a network of practitioners taking collective action on an ambitious 8‐year plan for transformation of the transportation sector.

Position Overview:
The Partnerships & Engagement (P&E) Intern is a temporary position supporting our communications and event planning efforts. SUMC interns are responsible for a wide range of duties in a thoughtful, creative, fast‐paced atmosphere. The position requires basic knowledge of design platforms; social media applications; event administration and event logistics; and strong organizational and writing skills.

Responsibilities:
Intern responsibilities may include tasks around events, communications, external relations, and partnerships, such as:

  • Events: Planning and logistics for SUMC events such as the 2023 National Shared Mobility Summit and smaller open houses, webinars, and other gatherings.
  • Communications: Preparing internal and external communications about shared mobility, sustainability and equity. These may include but are not limited to: articles and blog posts, news gathering, assisting with communication design, production and other visual needs, and social media writing;
  • External Relations: Writing press releases and assisting with public relations research and outreach;
  • Partnership Programs: Developing research on the needs and interests of leaders in the shared mobility industry.

In all of these areas, the students will gain applicable experience and expertise they can add to their portfolio, as well experience working with teams in a digital/virtual environment and on a national level.

Qualifications:
Graduate students or B.A. in Communications, Journalism, Public Affairs, Public Policy, Urban Planning, English, Business, or related programs.

The intern should be a flexible team player who is adept at research and writing and knowledgeable about transportation.

MARKETING STATEMENT

The Washington Metropolitan Transportation Authority, Office of Planning is seeking summer interns assist with our Capital and Systems Intelligence team, a group of data scientists who work to transform operational data sources into datasets, dashboards, tools, and visualizations to inform capital plans and programs, and transit systems performance and planning. A successful candidate will have a passion for public transportation, be adept at critical thinking and creative problem solving, and has fun wading knee-deep through unprocessed data generated by operational systems. Database skills (Oracle in particular) and experience working with Python data science libraries such as sklearn are highly desired.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

Graduation from high school or the possession of a high school equivalency certificate. Applicant must be attending an accredited college or university pursuing a degree in a discipline deemed appropriate for the position intern is seeking.

For students hired as Summer College Interns, the following distinctions are made from the above provisions of the Student Intern description.

The intern’s major or area of concentration must be aligned with the academic and functional requirements of the position for which the student has applied.
The intern should at minimum be a rising college freshman.
The intern must possess a minimum cumulative 2.8 GPA.

Position

CMAP is hiring three field data collection interns during the summer of 2023 to assist with transportation system data collection in support of CMAP and its partner agencies. The interns will be responsible for collecting data to fulfill agency needs, described in detail below.

Essential functions

In-person and video camera-assisted utilization counts for bicycle/pedestrian facilities.
Installing video camera equipment for vehicular (passenger and truck) ranging from 6 hours to 24 hours.
In-person and video camera-assisted railroad crossing delay observation counts.
Formatting of traffic/usage related data from CMAP and other sources, and geocoding into CMAP ArcGIS archives.
Installation of radar devices to collect speed data.
Collect field condition on the components of public rights of way to assess accessibility for people with disabilities.

Field data collectors will receive work instructions and assignments from the Project Manager for Summer Field Data Collection – Transportation Networks. Work activities will primarily be in outside field locations throughout the seven-county CMAP region, with occasional travel to the CMAP office location.

Travel expenses incurred traveling to field data collection locations and during the course of scheduled data collection activities will be reimbursed; field data collection interns will be expected to keep accurate records of their work travel activity.

Knowledge, skills, and abilities

Field data collectors will travel to field data collection locations by various means, including automobile, public transportation, and Uber/Lyft. A valid driver’s license and proof of vehicle insurance for any vehicle to be driven must be provided at time of interview. Applicants should have proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, including Outlook and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) such as ArcGIS and associated software. Field Data Collection Interns will not be under direct supervision while in the field on their assigned task. A high level of individual responsibility is expected, and self-motivation should be evident.

Equipment

Part of the work will be done remotely therefore interns will need access to a Windows computer, in good working order. If the intern does not have access to this equipment, it can be provided upon request.

This will be a 12-week paid internship that involves participating in a variety of GIS-based data development projects to support regional analysis, planning and forecasting activities at CMAP.

Essential functions:

Perform research to aid in the creation and maintenance of land use and transportation planning datasets
Edit and create GIS data (digitization and attribute update)
Conduct quality control and quality assurance on methods and procedures
Thoroughly document work products for use by other CMAP staff

Knowledge, skills, and abilities including competencies that may be representative but not all inclusive of those commonly associated with this position.

Knowledge of general GIS concepts and functions; familiarity with ArcGIS (Desktop and/or Pro) interface is required, as are basic office computer skills (word processing, Excel data entry). Prior experience in digitizing/editing vector GIS datasets is essential; knowledge of Python scripting or other programming languages and/or georeferencing raster imagery helpful. Familiarity with urban datasets (e.g., census, land use, zoning) is essential.

Position Description

The intern will support CMAP’s technical assistance and capacity building programs, which provide assistance to communities across the Chicago metropolitan region to develop local land use and transportation plans and assist in the implementation of those plans. The intern will be expected to support projects by performing geographic information system (GIS) analysis, researching, and writing about assigned topics, and participating in community engagement efforts. Project assignments will be determined based on program needs and the intern’s interests and skill sets. However, the intern should have a strong understanding of transportation and land use planning topics.

Essential Functions

The intern’s primary responsibilities will include a combination of the following:

Research and writing. The intern will assist project teams by conducting research and contributing to written products. This may include assisting in the development of existing conditions reports by reviewing and providing written summaries of past plans and ordinances. It may also include researching plans, programs, and policies of other planning entities and organizations, and surveying best practices in relevant topic areas. The intern should be able to convey research findings in a clear and concise manner.
Data analysis and mapping. The intern will help with regional and community-focused data collection, analysis, and mapping. This will include gathering data via the Census or other datasets related to issues of particular importance to communities or ON TO 2050 implementation. Familiarity with data sources, ability to analyze data, and ability to communicate the results of this analysis are necessary skills. The intern will also prepare maps to appear in interim and final documents related to projects.
Outreach. Projects involve staffing many public meetings. The intern will assist with various elements of public engagement including table facilitation, registration, and note-taking.
Future Leaders in Planning (FLIP): The intern will assist with CMAP’s FLIP program, a free leadership development program for high school students. The intern will help CMAP staff administer the program and facilitate interactions with regional leaders.

Knowledge, Skills, and Interests

General knowledge of, and interest in, urban and/or regional planning issues and practice such as transportation, land use, environmental, and social considerations in planning.
GIS concepts and functions, familiarity with ArcGIS, and experience working with large regional datasets.
Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop) and SketchUp
Microsoft Office

An agency-issued laptop may be provided as required.

Position

Responsible for providing assistance in collecting and analyzing project data to support CMAP’s transportation program management activities. Support with documentation of core decisions in development of the transportation planning process. Analyze transportation project expenditures to assess trends in project delays and cost changes.

Knowledge, skills, and abilities

Working knowledge of common operating systems and software applications including database systems, Windows and Microsoft Office with a focus on Microsoft Excel. Proficiency in reading, writing, and communication among team members is required. Basic database knowledge (particularly Microsoft Access and SQL) is desired, but not required.

Equipment

An agency-issued laptop may be provided as required.

Applicants enrolled in a bachelor or masters’ degree program in Public Administration, Urban Planning, Civil Engineering, or related field.

Summary
The Transportation Planning Division is seeking a motivated and organized self-starter to fill the role of Transportation Planning Assistant. This position is responsible for working with Town staff on transportation planning projects, multimodal data analysis, Vision Zero, transportation demand management (TDM), demographics studies, and GIS data management.

The position offers exposure to local government transportation planning focused on bicycle, pedestrian, and transit, and oversight from transportation planning professionals. The successful candidate will have opportunity to work with planners from multiple disciplines, other Town departments, as well as private sector firms.

Essential Functions
– Assist with data collection activities and analysis in the office and/or field
– Analyze and visualize data in an engaging and user-friendly manner
– Assist with transportation demand management projects and outreach
– Support Town’s Vision Zero initiative and participate in task force operations
– Prepare brief memos explaining methodology and findings
– Assist with public outreach, meetings, surveys, focus groups, etc.
– Prepare presentations and other materials for public consumption
– Conduct research to assist staff, especially on peer city best practices that may lead to local policy, process, or infrastructure change
– Assist staff on larger projects of interest (ex: development ordinance rewrite, area plan development, placemaking efforts, safe routes to school)
– Collect, enter, tabulate and analyze demographic and performance data
– Support other transportation planning projects and initiatives as needed and as interested

Minimum Qualifications
The ideal candidate should have one of the following qualifications:

  • completed a BA/BS in Urban Planning, Transportation Planning, Public Policy, Geography, or a related degree.
    be currently enrolled in a graduate planning program; or
    recently completed a graduate planning program.
    Proficiency in MS Office, Adobe products (including Illustrator and InDesign), and GIS is strongly preferred.

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION:

This position offers two types of employment opportunities:

Summer employment only: This option offers a full time (40 hours per week) position beginning mid-May/early June 2023 and ending mid-August 2023.
Summer employment extending into the academic year: this option offers a full-time (40 hours) position beginning mid-May/early June 2023 and converts to part-time (10-15 hours per week) beginning mid-August 2023.

Physical Demands:

Work is generally performed while sitting at a desk with intermittent standing or stooping. An incumbent in this position might also be required to lift light objects occasionally.

Responsibilities:

Faith Based Development Initiative (FBDI)

Data Collection and Analysis – Determine the number of parcels owned (or controlled) by houses of worship in our targeted geography
Assess inventory in targeted geographies (i.e., Nashville, TN) to identify parcels owned by houses of worship.
Create property profiles for each property, identifying ownership; location; acreage; square footage; zoning and buildable floor area, etc.
Develop a database with property profiles and contact information for tracking all houses of worship that own developable parcels.
Preservation

Atlanta Subsidized Multifamily
Utilizing the HouseATL Affordable Housing Database and National Housing Preservation database, complete data analysis for the City of Atlanta and five County Metro, continuing development of a prioritization matrix and working with partners to analyze opportunities and communicate results.
Develop visualizations of analysis, including charts, graphs, tables, maps, etc.
Atlanta and Miami Small Multifamily
Support the development and launch of the Southeast Preservation Next Academy. This may include support in outreach and promotion and content development.
Engage with the Preservation Next Data Fellow to analyze SMMF inventory, and to develop materials to share with partners and inform prioritization, including charts, graphs, tables, maps, etc.
Review research papers, attend webinars, and speak with partners to inform preservation frameworks and priorities.
State & Local Policy

Assist with the preparation of a brief one-to-two-page document summarizing relevant housing data across the Atlanta metro-area.
Support review of housing statistics to support policy advocacy
Qualifications:

An undergraduate degree, with preference for a graduate degree.
A minimum of 3 year’s related work experience in consulting, planning, policy, or housing development, including if applicable, time obtaining a Masters degree in city planning, public policy or administration, environmental studies, real estate development, or related field.
Familiarity with and interest in the policies, funding sources, financial structure and process of affordable housing development.
Strong data analysis and presentation skills required.
Microsoft Word, Access & Excel skills, and familiarity with web-based research are required; experience with public datasets and GIS required.
Superior research and writing skills.
Self-motivated, ability to work both independently and as a team player.
Ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks.
