Description

The Families and Workers Fund (FWF) seeks a Communications & Philanthropy Associate to join our team. This role is part of our Philanthropy & Operations Team and reports to the Director of Philanthropy & Operations.

Key responsibilities include managing the implementation of FWF’s strategic communications plan, managing the execution of external meetings and events, and producing (or overseeing external consultants to produce) key communications materials. This individual will be a creative and strong writer who will serve as FWF’s go-to for drafting materials, such as announcements, press releases, grant proposals, talking points, and the annual report, as well as designing visually engaging presentations for conferences and other events.

Responsibilities:

Communications:

Content Creation:

Serve as the team’s lead writer, helping us refine our voice as a growing organization, and manage the creation of announcements, press releases, our annual report, and other external communications materials; proofread and edit materials as needed.
Design visually engaging content for external presentations and meetings in coordination with the Executive Director and Director of Philanthropy & Operations.
Draft engaging, impactful talking points and messaging for Executive Director and other key stakeholders, such as our co-funders and co-chairs.
Create templates for fundraising materials (e.g. Standard “About Us” presentation) to be customized for multiple purposes and audiences.

Coordination and Management:

Develop communications strategy and timelines with the Director of Philanthropy & Operations. Track contact with external stakeholders and recommend next steps for connecting.
Maintain a list of conferences, speaking engagements, and other external events for the Executive Director and other organizational leaders. Make recommendations for impactful events segmented by outcome to fit into the overall strategic communications plan.
Manage all communications-related records and activities via Google Drive.
Make routine updates to our website and maintain our social media accounts (Twitter and LinkedIn), including content creation (Note: we maintain a very light social media presence, and social media management is not a major component of this job).

Events & Meeting Management:

Organize and manage FWF’s external events in partnership with the Project Assistant and with support from the Philanthropy and Operations Team, including: creating and tracking invitations, vendor management, event logistics, and developing content materials.

Stakeholder Engagement:

Along with the Director of Philanthropy & Operations and/or Executive Director, manage the relationship with any PR or Communications firms and track the progress of the annual strategic communications plan.
Assist the Director of Philanthropy & Operations by drafting or improving grant proposals and funder reports.
As needed, collaborate with grantees and other partners on joint, external communications efforts, such as social media posts spotlighting the grantees or shaping grantees’ announcements.

Minimum Requirements:

A minimum of two (2) years of experience in a relevant field, including at least two (2) years in a communications role.
Strong writing and content creation skills with exceptional attention to detail.
Experience drafting compelling talking points and written materials, including reports.
Shares FWF’s deep commitment to equity; values and seeks to advance equity in the workplace, including racial and gender equity.
Demonstrated experience in layout and design, including experience with tools like Canva or similar.
Strong skills in PowerPoint; knowledge of Google Apps, SurveyMonkey, and virtual meeting tools.

Available to work US Eastern Time Zone 9 am ET to 5 pm ET.

Desired Qualifications:

Some familiarity with nonprofit development and fundraising, including contributing in preparing proposals for funding.
Experience with virtual and in-person event design, production, and management.
Familiarity with philanthropy, government, or the nonprofit sector. Some understanding of the importance of equity in the nonprofit sector and philanthropy.
Experience with managing time and deadlines in a remote setting. Strong skills in virtual meeting tools, and Google Apps and/or Microsoft Office Suite.
Demonstrated skills in planning, organizing and implementing projects with multiple components.
Ability to work effectively as a member of a small, dedicated team.

$75,000 – $85,000 annually, commensurate to experience.

Travel Requirements:

The Families and Workers Fund (FWF) seeks a Program Associate to join our team. This role is part of our Program Team and reports to the Senior Program Manager, Policy and Partnerships.

Responsibilities:

Grantmaking, Program Strategy, and Research

Conduct research and analysis to inform grantmaking and program strategy
Contribute to assessing new potential grantees or partners, including by analyzing key dimensions of the organization being considered for funding (e.g., the organization’s impact strategy, leadership, financial size, potential risks, etc).
Contribute to drafting, formatting, and editing grantmaking memos, external presentations, and other materials about the Fund’s program strategy and/or impacts.
Work with the Executive Director to further develop and manage the Fund’s MEL processes, including synthesizing grantee-reported quantitative and qualitative data to produce aggregated, fund-level outcomes and insights. Help to manage the Fund’s relationship with the MEL consultant.

Project Planning, Management, and Administrative Coordination

Plan and manage virtual meetings with grantees and partners, including creating and distributing agendas, managing calendars, meeting requests, maintaining notes, and coordinating follow-ups.
Manage the grantmaking workflow and serve as a key contact to grantees:
Work closely with the Philanthropy & Operations Team to ensure timely payments.
Work with the Executive Director to plan and help manage regular Program Team internal meetings and strategy workshops, including drafting agendas and timelines, contributing to facilitation, and tracking and following up on action items.

Other Duties and Special Projects As Needed

Participate in various other Program Team activities and special projects as needed, including special projects that may have tight deadlines or involve complex, high-stakes partnerships.
Contribute to and participate in organization-wide activities, conferences, and retreats.

Minimum Requirements:

A minimum of two (2) years of experience in a role with similar and/or applicable responsibilities which may include roles in philanthropy/grantmaking, policy, or the nonprofit sector.

The Connecticut Chapter of the American Planning Association (CCAPA) seeks to award a scholarshipinternship to assist the CCAPA and its Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion ad hoc Committee (ED+I Committee) in the creation of a chapter Action Plan. This opportunity is offered to students currently enrolled or recently graduated who would like to help direct the CCAPA as they seek ways to facilitate a more equitable, diverse, and inclusive planning profession in the State of Connecticut. The Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Scholarship-Intern will have the opportunity to earn course credit and practice data collection and analysis techniques through a planning focused lens. This scholarship-internship will be remote and will not require in person meetings.

The primary responsibilities of the Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Intern will include:

  • Demographic research and analysis of Connecticut.
  • Creation, dissemination, and analysis of survey materials for a variety of audiences.
  • Leading focus groups with executive membership of the CCAPA.
  • Research into national, state, and local resources for advancing equity, diversity, and inclusion in the planning profession.
  • Drafting the report and working with the ED+I Committee to finalize the Action Plan.

Minimum Qualifications
The Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Intern should:

  • have or will be working towards a Bachelor’s in urban planning, sociology, human rights, political science, women gender and sexuality studies, public administration, or a related field.
  • have experience or a demonstrated educational focus in qualitative and quantitative research methods.
  • have experience or an educational focus in race, ethnicity, disability, gender, or sex.
  • be able to commit to an average of about 10 hours per week, with weeks of higher intensity and weeks of lower intensity.
  • have internet access to communicate with the CCAPA and the Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Committee.

Position Supervision and Duration
This is a temporary opportunity. The Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Intern will be expected to work about 10 hours a week from the beginning of April 2021 to the end of August 2021. Supervision and training will be provided by the CCAPA President and the ED+I Committee Chair.

Scholarship
A stipend of $3,500 and support for course credit are offered. The scholarship award is not required to go towards educational expenses.

The Program in Health Disparities (PriHD) Research at the Sheps Center is in need of a predoc trainee. The goal of this PriHD Predoctoral Trainee Position at the Sheps Center is to offer research and research skill-building opportunities for one student with an interest in health disparities research. Our main objective is to develop a grant proposal with the following aims:

  • Profile and/or describe the demographics, tasks, patient condition, and resources and supports of home health workers in NC
  • Understand spatial characteristics of COVID-19 and spread in NC
  • Understanding the COVID-19-related impact to the home health workforce in NC

General list of duties:

  • Support the grant writing process through conducting literature searches and annotating bibliographies, drafting sections of the research proposal, compiling bio sketches and other documents needed to support the proposal
  • Assist with identifying funding opportunities
  • Coordinating and scheduling meetings with research team members and attending meetings and taking minutes
  • Other duties as assigned by the PriHD Research team

Position availability: There is 1 position available that includes a small stipend paid in monthly installments. No tuition remission will be provided.

2020 APA-NC Diversity Scholarships – Ends on October 31, 2020

The Program:  The Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Committee of the North Carolina Chapter of the American Planning Association (APA-NC) strives to address Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in the Planning profession as well as in our planning practices.  The purpose of the APA-NC Diversity Scholarship program is to foster increased interest in the study of urban planning within the black, indigenous, or person of color (BIPOC) student population at the undergraduate and graduate levels.  The program is open to undergraduate degree students and master’s degree students. Three scholarships of $1,000 will be awarded to be used for tuition, fees, books, or academic materials.

Eligibility:  Eligible applicants must be BIPOC students seeking to work in the planning profession, and have a student membership to the NC-APA (free for students). Applicants must intend to work as a practicing professional planner in the non-profit, public or private sector in the State of North Carolina and are currently enrolled in either of the following:

  • Undergraduate students in a planning program in the State of North Carolina
  • Masters students in a planning program in the State of North Carolina

Application Requirements:  Applicants for the Diversity Scholarship shall submit all of the following:

  • 1 to 2-page personal and background statement written by the student, describing their interest in a career in planning and describing what impact the student wants to make in the planning field related to marginalized communities/ populations or the planning profession;
  • One letter of recommendation from a professor, a community leader, or current/ past employer in support of the student’s application and personal background statement;
  • transcript of current course of study (for current students) or a copy of an acceptance letter from a graduate planning school (for incoming students); and
  • Resume of work experience and background.

Selection Criteria:  The Diversity Scholarship Selection Committee will review applications and determine the scholarship award winners. Applications will be judged using the following criteria, listed in order of importance:

  1. The significance of the applicant’s personal and background statement;
  2. The content in the letter of recommendation; and
  3. Academic achievement and/or service or impacts made in the community or the planning profession.

As part of the selection process and at the sole option of the Diversity Scholarship Selection Committee, the top applicants may be required to participate in a telephone interview with members of the committee.

The Award Process:  The Diversity Scholarship Selection Committee will convene in November 2020 to review applications and identify the scholarship award recipients. The Committee will identify the top five participants and issue the awards to the highest ranked. Award recipients are required to provide an emailed acceptance of the award to the Diversity Scholarship Coordinator within ten (10) calendar days of receiving an award notification message. With the acceptance of the money, the award recipient will be asked to provide their official transcript, current mailing address, a photo and a 250-500 word biography to be featured in the next APA-NC newsletter and in APA-NC social media and website. In the event that the winner cannot fulfill the requirements of the scholarship, the award will be granted to the next ranked participant.
