Practicum Description: An exciting opportunity to help create structure and momentum for Orange County’s Master Aging Plan (MAP). We are seeking one practicum student to join a team of people this summer who are evaluating Orange County’s 4th Master Aging Plan and developing a strategic plan for the 5th. The Master Aging Plan is a five-year plan that guides “all things aging” in Orange County; Housing, Transportation, Social Inclusion, Civic Engagement, Employment, Outdoor Spaces, Community Supports, Health Services, and Communication.

Practicum deliverables include: (1) Program Evaluation Report for MAP #4 including the Report from the Ripple Effect Mapping event and (2) Plan for Community Engagement and Development of the 5th MAP including a Community Planning Logic Model and Data Collection Instruments. Ideally, the student will be interested in applying evaluation, community engagement, and planning methods that promote age-friendly communities, racial equity, and partnership models.

Brief Organizational Descriptions: The Orange County Department on Aging (OCDOA) is a one-stop resource where older adults can meet their social, mental, physical, financial, and day-to-day practical needs. We offer integrated aging services and programs at our two senior centers including, wellness and education classes, lunches, trips, and much more. We strive to make Orange County a great place to age. Our mission is to provide leadership in planning and operating a system of integrated aging services, supports, and engagement.

UNC’s Partnerships in Aging Program (PiAP) works to foster a vision of later life as a time for continued growth, adaptation, and contribution. We engage students, faculty, and community members to challenge stereotypes about aging and grow together through intergenerational dialogue. We enter into reciprocal relationships with local, state, national, and global partners to promote innovation and inclusion in aging services and programs. We create opportunities to work with and learn from marginalized elders, students, organizations, and communities (e.g., people of color, first generation college students, people with lower incomes, LGBTQ people), as it benefits all of us.

Compensation: $3500 from May through mid-August 2021 (a minimum of 200 hours. approx. 16 hours/week for 15 weeks with some schedule flexibility. Students may start earlier than May if they desire.)

Project team: Cass Dictus has a master’s degree in public health and is currently a doctoral student at UNC’s School of Nursing. Cass is also a core team member with the Partnerships in Aging Program. For the past two years Cass has been evaluating the 4th Master Aging Plan. Cass will supervise the practicum student and a summer intern.

Goal: The ultimate goal is to help Orange County Department on Aging and its many community partners to provide excellent services and supports that meet the highest priority needs of the rapidly increasing population of older adults in the county. Achieving our goal will be accomplished by focusing attention on the cross-cutting aging issues that arise when physical or cognitive impairments require adaptations, or lack of resources compromises safety and engagement with others. The Boston Transportation Department (BTD) is seeking a highly motivated Transportation Program Planner to lead a community process for revitalization of Blue Hill Avenue and Columbia Road, two of the City’s most iconic and diverse boulevards.

Reporting to and working directly with the Neighborhood Transportation Planning Director in BTD, the Corridor Planner works with local community groups, neighborhood institutions, local businesses, advocacy groups and public agencies to engage residents in a grassroots effort to design a neighborhood friendly street with facilities that encourage walking, bicycling, and reliable public transportation.

Responsibilities include:

  • Manages the community engagement and visioning process from concept to preliminary design for corridors such as Blue Hill Avenue and Columbia Road.
  • Manages quick-build early-action projects that are installed in projects.
  • Manages a professional team capable of engaging in community outreach and civic engagement of diverse populations who assist in the public process.
  • Works hand-in-hand with a technical design and engineering team who assist in developing the vision.
  • Integrates prior established planning recommendations including those put forth in the City’s Transportation Plan Go Boston 2030 and Greenlinks.
  • Supports ongoing work related to the City’s Vision Zero and Boston Bikes initiatives.
  • Participates as a core member of the team developing shared-transportation concepts and collaborates with private service providers.
  • Performs related work as required.

Minimum Entrance Qualifications

  • Four (4) years of transportation planning experience in work which included community outreach, of which at least two (2)  years must have been in a project management capacity.
  • A bachelor’s degree in city planning or related field preferred and may be substituted for two (2) years of the required experience. The required project management experience may not be substituted.
  • Applicants with master’s degree, GIS mapping skills, and demonstrated ability to take projects from concept to implementation strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated record working in multi-disciplinary outcome-oriented teams.

Summary + Overview

As a Programs Specialist, you will lead and support projects by designingimplementing, and evaluating active transportation, TDM, and traffic safety programs. This position is based in Alta’s headquarters in Portland, OR, though we may be open to Seattle-based candidates. The position is remote at present but will be located in our office once we can reopen.

This position will lead and support many types of transportation campaigns, including the following:

  • Media campaigns
  • Outreach, marketing, and communications
  • Education programs
  • Transportation Demand Management (TDM) programs

A day in the life at this job might involve setting up and preparing questions for focus groups with neighborhood residents; developing a campaign marketing and outreach strategy; coordinating with our graphic design team to produce marketing materials; coordinating and overseeing the activities of remote outreach staff; and writing and implementing social media and other communications activities to support campaigns.

This exempt position is responsible for leading large tasks and small projects, copywriting and content development, managing the creation of print and digital materials, and communicating effectively with our clients and the public.

Position Priorities

The essential priority for this position is to work with a team to support the delivery of transportation programs and campaigns to our clients and their community members by:

  • Assisting with project management, including taking responsibility for managing individual tasks and some small projects as assigned
  • Helping to lead the development and implementation of communications strategies in the service of our campaigns
  • Working with graphic designers, translators, web developers, and our clients to facilitate the creation of high-quality graphic and web products
  • Writing communications/marketing content, client communications, memos, and reports
  • Engaging community members directly and by directing the work of outreach staff, and public speaking (e.g. at conferences and workshops)

Requirements

This position requires a combination of skills, experience, and education including, but not limited to:

Role
You will work as part of the Transportation Data Science Team and will be responsible for conducting data analysis, GIS-based analysis, and work on data visualization tasks. Some tasks will be for specific transportation and transit planning projects, while some will be for internal tool development that can be applied to a variety of projects. Foursquare ITP projects span a diverse range of contexts and scales, including transit development plans, transportation needs assessments, station access and capacity plans, transit route planning, long range planning, and transit performance monitoring. Responsibilities will include:

  • Participating in teams focused on a variety of project types with multiple project managers.
  • Conducting basic data loading, cleaning, and analysis in R.
  • Developing and applying a variety of methods for analysis of complex transit data sets (including fine-grain bus APC, AVL, and other ITS data).

As part of the District’s Department of Transportation (DDOT) cooperative agreement with the Howard University Transportation Research Center (HUTRC), DDOT engages full-time students as interns from universities in the DC Metropolitan Area and all over the country to promote the advancement of engineering and policy research. Interns are essential members of the Resources for the Future (RFF) Research and Policy Engagement team. We work with leading national and global partners—from technologists at NASA to climate scientists at our new European institute—to apply an economic lens to climate change and other global environmental and resource challenges of the 21st century. We’re leaders in our field: RFF was recently named #1 for environmental economics from a field of 8,000 global institutions. RFF’s research and engagement activities center on the economics of: (1) designing smart emissions reduction strategies; (2) Confronting risks and building resilience; and (3) cross-cutting issues and strategies. RFF seeks impact with decisionmakers in key venues, including at the federal, state, and international levels, and with the business community. Much of RFF’s current work is focused on strategies for addressing the climate challenge.

Our research internships are a 10-week program paid at $15 an hour for up to 35 hours a week. Internships this year will be conducted virtually unless otherwise noted.

We are seeking an intern to support an ongoing project that will build a used passenger vehicle market equilibrium and scrappage model using a variety of different data sources, including the National Household travel Survey. The project requires merging the used vehicle equilibrium and scrappage model with an existing model of the new vehicle market. The intern will:

  • Assist with organizing and compiling datasets required to build the model.
  • Code used vehicle equilibrium conditions.
  • Calibrate vehicle scrappage schedules.
  • Education: Priority is given to candidates enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program that is relevant to RFF’s research and mission. Highly motivated candidates in the social and natural sciences with training in economics and quantitative methods, or with a keen interest in public policy, are encouraged to apply.

We are looking for a critical Regional Planning Manager to join our Integrated Mobility team, and be a part of our Special Knowledge Group. This leadership role has a direct impact on the effectiveness, efficiency and safety multimodal, bicycle, pedestrian and public transportation services across North Carolina.

In this role, you will

  • Supervisor Transportation Planner I and II positions in our Regional Planning section.
  • Lead weekly staff meetings, monitor and review your team’s individual and group performance, and coordinate section needs and capacity to managerial staff.
  • Provide technical assistance on multimodal transportation planning support to local and regional governments and coordinate with regional planning organizations (RPOs, MPOs) and public transportation systems.
  • Deliver planning assistance, program guidance, and coordinate and implement activities relative to federal and state planning programs, initiatives, grants, requirements and policies.
  • Administer multimodal/bicycle/pedestrian/transit plans and studies

What You Bring

  • In-depth knowledge of multimodal, bicycle, pedestrian and transit planning principles, techniques and procedures and their interrelationship.
  • Deep knowledge of Federal and State laws, guidelines, and funding programs related to multimodal, bicycle, pedestrian and public transportation infrastructure and systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to evaluate policies and programs and identify areas for modernization.
  • Demonstrated ability to direct, organize and oversee the activities of professional level employees, including transportation planners, consultants and technical experts.
  • Excellent oral and written communications and skills to build and maintain positive working relationships with a range of state, federal and local officials.
  • Ability to work independently, with little supervision.
  • Demonstrated attention and accuracy to detail.
  • Able to handle special projects from start to finish.

Education & Experience

  • Master’s degree in urban and regional planning, transportation planning, engineering, business administration, or economics and
  • 3 years experience in public transportation planning, administration, community planning, or transit management; or
  • Bachelor’s degree in urban and regional planning, transportation planning, engineering, business administration, or economics and
  • 5 years experience in the collection and analysis of economic and social data, 2 of which must have been in public transportation planning or transit management; or
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience.
